It is up to those who would deny rights to specify how marriage harms society. The only reasons opponents can offer are religious and being uncomfortable with the idea. No scientifically valid reasons.

Who other people choose to love is none of my business, it does not affect my life in any way. And denying someone the right to marry who they love is like denying someone else a doughnut because you're on a diet.
