Just have legal agreements between two people that accomplish the same goal, and leave the government out!

I agree with your comment to a certain extent. The FOUNDATION of marriage is rooted in RELIGION. And since "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,nor the free exercise thereof",marriage should be WHOLLY overseen by the church. What really irritates me is how much a divorce costs. Why should a LAWYER be allowed to profit several thousand dollars from a process that he was not a part of from the beginning??? If couples aren't compelled to pay several thousand dollars to get married,why should they be forced to pay several thousand dollars to get a divorce??? If a couple wants a divorce,they should be allowed to go back to where the marriage originated...in the CHURCH. Allow the church to perform divoce preceedings for free It costs about $20 for a marriage license and several thousand to get a divorce...and the couple is left financially strangled afterwards while the divorce lawyers head to the bank.

Exactly the government should not deal with marriage anyways because it deals with religion. The Government should not be telling other people’s faith’s that their views are wrong, and Governments views are right.
