I don't think the government has any business in the marriage business. This should be decided between adults and left to the people and their beliefs.

Are you suggesting that marriage should have no legal obligations between the participants and their offspring? That is against the legal tradition of almost all cultures. Even tribal cultures expect and generally enforce the responsibilties expected by the society.
