In this country, you have a choice of getting married in a religious ceremony or having a strictly secular service at a courthouse or in a park, etc. But getting a marriage license is not optional. So marriage is actually a civil right, sanctioned by the government, whether you dress up the occasion with an additional religious ceremony or not. When you look at it that way, how is it possible to deny some citizens their civil rights? I tend to think all citizens should enjoy the same responsibilities and liberties: voting, paying taxes, getting married, etc.
