It's safe when properly built and monitored.
Only a fool would build a city below sea level (New Orleans) and nuke power plant on a major fault line by the ocean (Japan).

It's "safe" when properly built (somewhere else), monitored (remotely), maintained (by radiation-resistant robots)... and when the fuel and waste product hazards are overcome (never on this planet).

Do you understand how many solar panels it would take to replace a Nuclear plant... My guess is you are thinking about the home systems.
Wind farms... hmmm T Boone Pickens.. These have to be out in rural area because of the noise. No one wanted part of his plan, and he was paying for a ton of it

But I think you are on track if we are talking about "off the grid" based solution.

Keep in mind there are 104 reactors in the US, producing around 19% of the US power. Nuclear is a safe alternitive if built in the right places, and is monitored

According our gov.#'s it's more like 8%, most of these are not in the right places and they don't know what to do their radioactive waste either!

Are you kidding? Sometimes it's like living in the dark ages when the people in this area offer their opinions about what is good for the planet and it's many life forms. There are so many other completely safe means to meet our energy needs.

Taken from http://www.sierraclub.org/nuclear/factsheet.a...

"Why Nuclear Power Doesn't Make Sense"

"As the disasters at Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and Fukushima have shown, nuclear power can cause catastrophic damage to land, human health, and our food supply. We should pursue our cleanest, quickest, safest, and cheapest energy options first: Nuclear power comes out last in every one of those categories."

"In the long-term, nuclear power is also unnecessary: With an intensive effort to exploit our clean energy resources, we can power our society, create good jobs, and keep our environment healthy with renewable energy such as solar and wind. With the right policies and investments, we can achieve 100 percent renewable energy in our lifetimes -- without nuclear power."

Yes people are not bad per se, just badly governed. I believe Dr. Rudolph Diesel spoke these words as you will learn from watching the movie "Fuel" ... http://www.youtube.com/movie/fuel

"Director Josh Tickell takes us along for his 11 year journey around the world to find solutions to America's addiction to oil. A shrinking economy, a failing auto industry, rampant unemployment, an out-of-control national debt, and an insatiable demand for energy weigh heavily on all of us. Fuel shows us the way out of the mess we're in by explaining how to replace every drop of oil we now use, while creating green jobs and keeping our money here at home. The film never dwells on the negative, but instead shows us the easy solutions already within our reach."

After you watch this nearly 2 hour long movie I hope you will see how badly "governed" this nation and world have become. There is, and always has been, a better way. Those in power know this and are doing all they can to make an unbelievable fortune off the indifference and ignorance of the American people.

The nuclear power plant built in Japan was equipped with safety measures that allowed it to withstand a 9.0 magnitude earthquake, one of the largest ever recorded in history, and the only reason that the reactors melted down was because a tsunami that reached areas up to 40m damaged the backup generator. Please make sure that you do some background research before stating such things, it'll make your argument much more credible.

I strongly agree with the point that you raise; it's going to take a lot of renewable energy sources to replace what nuclear power already supplies. In particular I've been doing some research about Japan, and nuclear power supplies 11% of the energy consumed in the country. The government will have to fill in the gap some way and cannot instantly switch to other renewable energy sources. Furthermore, renewable energies such as solar and wind power are unpredictable regarding how much energy it would be able to produce.

Only a fool would consider that an ABSOLUTE statement, and 1STG, likely doesn't consider it absolute. The issue of handling the nuke waste musts also be considered. There is a risk of failure for anything manmade.

To me, the question is: Is the risk worth the reward?
