The economy can't sustain an energy crisis which is what we will have in the sort term. Other energy sources are not yet available and are in short supply.

They are unsafe, nuclear industry doesn't pay the costs resulting from the destruction their industry causes.

Nuclear power around the world has accumulated thousands and thousands and thousands of hours of safe operation, without incident. Even a 9.0 earthquake and a 45 foot tsunami did not result in a single death. To determine the safety of anything, you cannot simply look at one incident, you need to look at it's entire history and weigh the risks vs. the benefit. Until we can rely 100% on renewables, I would rather we phase out coal and oil which have a proven track-record of being unsafe.

Doomsday Machine: Why Nuclear Will Never Be the Answer
What the atomic energy lobby calls The Nuclear Renaissance is advance warning of uncontrolled and runaway financial and economic disaster.
http://21stcenturywire.com/2011/03/25/doomsda...

^"When we wake up to hear the incredible and fantastic worst case has already happened- as we have these last few weeks with Japan’s own major accident, or later because of operator error, or even in the shape of purposeful military or terror attack on large civil nuclear installations, it will be too late – much too late."

"The risks of nuclear power far outweigh the benefits."

(I guess this guy is saying that your Nuketopian Ideal is a faded dream. Ehhh- whuduz he know? He ain't no nuke engineer, but then neither's Coulter)

Andrew McKillop is guest writer and energy markets analyst for 21st Century Wire. He has more than 30 years experience in the energy, economic and finance domains. Trained at London UK’s University College, he has extensive experience in energy policy, project administration, including the development and financing of alternate energy.
(but I spoze I should listen to Ann Coulter instead, who says that radiation is good for me!-ppfffttt!)

$0.04/kw versus $0.30 for wind/solar. Makes sense. That plus they are safe. No deaths in commercial nuclear power in the united states in over 40 years.

The hysteria over nuclear power exhibited in the Brattleboro forum since the Japanese earth quake / tsunami is beyond irrational; it borders on insanity. I always knew the Brattleboro area was a haven for hippies, burnouts, and the mental disturbed, but from what I've been reading the last couple of weeks more then confirms it.

I think people are heartsick about what happened to the people of Japan.I have personally done business with many people in Japan over the years. Not a day goes by that I don't wonder what their fate is.

Then you have the Nuclear Regulatory Agency giving Vt Yankee a Green Light on relicensing . Not just relicensing for a few years . 20 years. This in the middle of many unsolved issues.

Leaks. Old Plant Mark 1 Container. Blown Fuses.Collasping Tower. Sorry there are issues. They look like they were given a PASS.

The focus is on that Plant . To irrationally generalize an area as being inhabited by Hippies, burnouts, mentally disturbed ,is beyond the pale . It is insulting.

This plant potentially can have hazardous effects on New Englands way of life. The crisis in japan I believe has brough more people's point of view to the discussion .

People from all walks of life. They have a right to their opinion . Their lives are and their families lives can be affected.

Categorizing, insulting, demeaning and trying to get everyone to shut up that don't go for the nuclear line is self defeating .

The debacle in Japan has woken up the sleeping public. You don't have to be a Nuclear Scientist to know gut wise there is something wrong . The stakes are too high to let someone trivialize it.

You are trying to Trivialize it.

Can you guys think of another way to produce cheaper electricity? If we compared death per Mw of electricity produced in the U.S. I wonder what would be the least?

Candidly . The devastation we are witnessing nothing, nothing is worth this.

We don't even know about the long term consequences of the people exposed.Their children ,their children's children.

Noone seems to be looking out for the public. No one.

Generations to come will not look on our stewardship of this earth with admiration.

I think that we do know about long term consequences.
Do we know about the consequences of an oil refinery burning for 10 days?

How can you say no one is looking out for the public when they are housing thousands of people in schools and anywhere else they can find.

You are right CH the devastation is not worth it, so I hope we all learned to not build villages near fault lines.

How about we start off by finding out how the plant has been dumping hot water into the Conn River without a permit.

This is not a chess game .

Their move . Our Move. This is what is right . What is wrong .

This if it is true is wrong . No permit ,should mean no dumping. No dumping should mean if you dump no renewale of a license. What is going on ?

This smells . Like Dead fish . Melting skating rinks, in Ma.

Hope this answers your question.

Cheers.

"The appeal before this Court involves a permit amendment which was issued by the ANR at the end of the permit’s term in late March of 2006. Because Entergy had filed an application for renewal of the expiring permit at least 180 days before its expiration, Entergy remains entitled to operate under the terms of the expired permit while ANR processes the renewal application, until the issuance of the renewal permit. See Vermont Water Pollution Control Permit Regulations § 13.5(b)(1); 3 V.S.A.§ 814(b); see also this Court’s May 22, 2008 Decision and Order, as modified by the June 30, 2008 Decision and Order, for a detailed explanation of the permitting scheme which governs the application at issue in this appeal."
