Marijuana Debate - Norman, OK

The only remaining arguments against legalization have as much to do with reality as does Creationism. The sooner we all realize this fundamental fact, the sooner we can all move on with our lives and put this hippie crap behind us.

How much we COULD be making off the medical and industrial uses of marijuana outweighs the amount spent keeping it illegal (jail, the courts times, etc) and the "damage" marijuana users are doing to themselves

explain how its illegal? When it was mandatory by the us government to grow it. Utah democrats are racist they are the ones who sreamed them dirty mexicans are smoking that devil weed. I mean come on......really we are putting the legalities on that statement? We all know marijuana dont fry your brain infact it cures not kills. Look at the studies none point to death. And my next question is if its so bad why do you hold a patent on it?

Very effective for chronic pain/headaches. Harmless side-effects. Not a single recorded death attributed to it. Can you say any of that about Advil? Thousands of people die every year from Advil, if you pop 13 (which you can buy for $5) you die. I just don't get what the law is for.

Legalization of marijuana is long overdue. The reasons it was declared illegal to begin with are spurious, at best, and outright lies at worst. Legalization will not cause more people to use marijuana. It will take the profit out of it and slam the door on drug dealers who use it to entice people to use more harmful substances that have a much greater profit margin. If you use pot now, keeping it illegal will not stop you. If you don't use pot now, legalizing it will not make you start. But, legalizing it will put more money back in your own pocket and will allow more tax dollars to be spent on catching serious criminals and other more worthwhile projects.

The prohibition of marijuana began when Harry Anslinger gave his testimony to Congress in 1937 where he said "There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers.Their Satanic music, jazz and swing, result from marijuana usage.
This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relationswith Negroes, entertainers and any others." This statement and many others that are contained in Anslinger's "Gore Files" were used to eradicate the legality of marijuana. Seems that good ole Harry and his cronies had a hidden agenda. Dupont petrochemical interests and William Randolph Hearst then started their campaign of insanity and racism against marijuana. Around 1931 advertising started for hemp as the new billion dollar crop. Anslinger had reports from experiments with mechanical harvesting of hemp in 1936, reporting that the machines were no success. Therefore more or less saying growing cannabis was not cost effective.
The AMA Doctor that someone thought would be a good idea to have there objected to the prohibition of marijuana as it did not do the harm claimed and it had countless medical benefits. He was ignored. The AMA doctors were hunted down after that. And Marijuana research was banned in the States when it was discovered that it did not cause or contribute to cancer.

Anslinger continued his insanity until President Kennedy fired him when he became President. But the damage had been done and We have been fighting prohibition since.

The benefits of Marijuana as a medicinal alternative to many pharmaceuticals(that do more harm than good and can even cause death) are boundless.

Taxation and regulation of this plant that can be used for over 12,500 textiles,fuel,food..etc. would benefit this Country. Look at the billions being spent on people who's only crime is possession of a plant. Shouldn't that money and man-power be used for actual crimes and criminals?

And then the the opposition just looks at me and goes, "Yes, but you guys have really stunningly stupid hippies," and all I can do is bow my head and accept that it will be yet another year or more of this pointless waste of money and time.

The problem is that the article that is linked, and in fact ALL anti-pharmaceutical articles written by hippies, are written from the perspective that all drugs are bad but pot is good so we need to legalize pot. The fact that you "don't see how that makes [yourself] or anyone a else a 'good intentioned hippy'" is really kind of the problem.
Pot doesn't treat anything. At all. All of the research that "shows" how it helps, just shows how it alleviates symptoms. This is a perfectly acceptable thing, BUT IT IS NOT CURING ANYTHING. When you try and suggest that it is some magic elixir, YOU'RE NOT HELPING.
ALL of the problems that you attribute to pharmaceuticals are really problems that are present in the business sector, and are better addressed by people who are fighting for Wall Street reform.
