Unnecessary spending has been going on long before President Obama took office. There was a time when people went to coffee shops to buy a simple cup of coffee, brought their basic good pair of leather shoes to the shoemaker to replace the rubber soles (instead of throwing the shoe out & buying a "designer" pair. A basic leather handbag was sufficient (instead of the sudden "need" for Coach Bags or those ugly Vera Bradley patchwork bags). Simple board games, sports equipment, and a deck of cards use to keep people busy. Butcher stores use to be cheaper than buying meat at the supermarket, etc., etc. The list goes on and on. A simple cell phone & home computer use to be a luxury. Technology now has made more advanced items seem to be a necessity (when they're really not). Then we wonder why adults are selfish & greedy, and our kids are spoiled rotten.

I don't think things are so bad; in fact, probably the opposite. People are living longer than ever now, crimes rates have been declining for decades across North America, and new medical/scientific discoveries are being made every day. There are problems in the world of course, but things are still looking up (generally speaking). As for Christmas, hey, I for one enjoy buying gifts for my loved ones. :)

I guess it's how you look at it on whether things aren't so bad or they are. I disagree on the crime rate, though. I feel crime has increased. People are taking desperate measures in stealing, due to the economy (not that it's an excuse to steal). Plus, the uprise in abuse of prescription drugs has turned users into big thieves - stealing from everyone (even their own families), and leading to increased armed robberies at banks, convenience stores, and jewelery stores. There are more people who've "lost it" by killing family members & themselves. It's a mad world! Having said all of this, let's take time to appreciate what we have, pray for those who are still suffering the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, and try to do some volunteering and/or donating to help those less fortunate. Merry Christmas.
