There definitely needs to be Insurance reform by setting minimum standards for Health Insurance on a National Basis. There are too many "what ifs", "needs clarification", "too expensive", "not completely thought out", "unread" pages in these proposals.

There is definite need for heath care reform; the insurance companies have been in total control for too long, they need to be reigned in... and there needs to be a public insurance option for low income and unemployed people.

Stop the corporate greed and introduce competition through the public option. Watch how fast insurance companies shape up when people start exercising their right to choose. They won't go out of business, but WILL be forced to play fair. Better outcomes, longer lives for all.

Tort reform and private help for those who really need it, but not more taxes or Gov. control and intrusion into our lives! America is a republic - not a democracy. Learn the difference.

Health Care System Print | Text Size: S M L XL Help

Canada's health care system has been a work in progress since its inception. Reforms have been made over the past four decades and will continue in response to changes within medicine and throughout society. The basics, however, remain the same - universal coverage for medically necessary health care services provided on the basis of need, rather than the ability to pay.

Canada's publicly funded health care system is best described as an interlocking set of ten provincial and three territorial health insurance plans. Known to Canadians as "medicare", the system provides access to universal, comprehensive coverage for medically necessary hospital and physician services.

Health Canada's Role
The federal government, the ten provinces, and the three territories have key roles to play in the health care system in Canada. Health Canada's mandate is to help Canadians maintain and improve their health. Among other activities, Health Canada's responsibilities for health care include setting and administering national principles for the health care system through the Canada Health Act and delivering health care services to specific groups (e.g., First Nations and Inuit). Working in partnership with provinces and territories, Health Canada also supports the health care system through initiatives in areas such as health human resources planning, adoption of new technologies and primary health care delivery.

What Information is Available
In this section, you will find an overview of Canada's health care system. More detailed information is also available on specific elements of the health care system, including health human resources, primary health care, home and community care and pharmaceuticals coverage. There is also information on studies examining the health care system and links to further information.

I agree with you. I am a Newengland waterbury, ct native and I am pissed at our destroyed system. People are much like puppets within our system that they believe private healthcare is the way to go. they have to remember, not everyone was born with a silver spoon in their mouth!... These insurance companies need competition so they can straighten up. they tried to charge me 290.00 a month because i'm 40lbs over weight mainly muscle... they're pathetic! if we had a public option they will karate chop that premimum down in a heart beat.. their requirements are rediculous and it's killing our american people.

No that is not true, my wife is from canada and so are her parents... if they get hurt bad here, they're forced to get the good ol american welcome "25,000" for a broken leg replacement! lmfao! back in their home Canada it's covered by their government! you know why? because canadiens care about their people, here in america we don't care if the next unforunate one dies, because it's all about the money here. if you're rich you're taken care of, if you're poor " then just please die quicky" some people wine about canada having long waits etc etc well it's only fair if one person is sicker then the next pull that sicker person in. but atleast they have the option to see a doctor, try to go into a private doctor without a healthcare card, he will deny you unless you pay a fortune like 300.00 for a visit... that is rediculous... what have we become?
