I'm sorry, if we're going with the whole "Bible as our backup" theory, then may I raise the point that it was stated (please correct me if I'm wrong, but I did go to Catholic school for seven years) that if one does not believe in God or Jesus that the rules in the Bible do not apply to you? There's this little principle called "separation of Church and State" on which America was based, and therefore the rules of one religious order should not define our laws. You don't have to deal with it directly, but just let the people who love each other have their union be sanctioned by law!
