Why shouldn't 2 people in love be able to commit themselves to each other?

It's a matter of religious freedom. Some churches want to marry gays. Why should the government forbid this practice?

Because it is important for people to be able to live their lives the way they see fit. If two people love each other, they should be able to get married. Basically all of my partnered gay friends, and myself, are married....in the way that we cohabitate with our mates and do everything like a married couple would do, but we don't have legal recognition and protection, which is discriminatory.

I think most people oppose to gay marriage would be ok with civil unions allowing for same rights as hetero married people. The gays are stuck on semantics. They know marriage is hot button for hetero couples, one which they want to push to "prove" being homo. is acceptable. See it is wrong for someone oppose to gay marriage to speak out. They are being homophobic, and bigoted. However if a gay wants to shove their lifestyle down my throat, it is OK.

Civil unions, and marraige re not the same thing. While both show a legal contract to each other.. that is where the simularities end. If a couple gets a C/U in Il. and one is transfered to a different state, they must weigh the transfer because that state may not accept there c/u. The federal government will not accept C/U for anything. It is not worth the piece of paper it was signed on... So until C/U is put on a full equal plane as marriage, then the homo. community will, and rightly so, fight for marraige

Love, not hate. Don't deny others their happiness. Happiness that doesn't harm you in any way.

Love is love. It is a gift. It is nobody's business but your own who you marry; no one voted on your marriage.

Straight people have already disgraced marriage. Gay people can't do any worse.
