According to my trusty Webster's "Marriage" means:
"the institution whereby men and women are joined in a special kind of social and legal dependence for the purpose of founding and maintaining a family" Words mean stuff. Unless someone has changed the meaning of "marriage" lately I have a hard time coming to grips with the term "gay marriage". Call it something else. Call it a :Civil Union between same sex partners". Don't call it a marriage. |

people who are "gay" are citizens, just like everyone else, and ought to enjoy the benefits of legal marriage. To not let them marry is dicriminatory, and should be illegal. They have the same rights as heterosexuls.

I'm a straight guy, married for two yrs, can't figure out how two people with the same equipment who love each other can hurt me. My marriage isn't going to suffer. The argument always seems to come back to the Bible, but not everyone believes in that, which is why there's a legally mandated separation between Church and State. It's OK for priests to bugger little boys (agaist their will, which is called "rape") but two grown men (or women) who love each other can't get the same rights as those of us with differing body parts? Grow up and get with the program. Most people opposing this are probably self-hating gays anyway. Focus on your life; why prohibit someone's happiness because you don't agree? Does it hurt you? Lighten up; God's OK with gays, but He hates self-righteous jerks.(And athiests, Muslims, etc. don't care what YOUR God says. Church and State, remember?) |

No. See the definition above which describes a "true" marriage. Again, most people are OK with gay couples having a "civil union". Use that term and call it a day. Don't distort the word "marriage", and therefore cheapen the institution. This is what most thoughtful people believe. It doesn't come out of hate or gay bashing. |

That obvious point aside, to the extent that the state still has an interest in marriage at all, there is no intelligent factual argument in favor of it being illegal. And before you bother 'I think it's icky!!' and 'It cheapens marriage!(whatever that means)" and 'It's a sin!' are not logical factual arguments. There is ZERO evidence that allowing gays to marry would have any negative affect on society. That is one reason why the plaintiffs failed so astoundingly in this case. They were completely incapable of demonstrating any credible threat to society from allowing same sex marriage. Because there is no such threat. It's a boogeyman used to oppose gay marriage without having to look like you are opposed to homosexuals in general. If people were really so concerned about the institution of marriage, they would be clamoring for divorce and adultery (also both sins by the way) to be made illegal as well. Oddly, you don't hear that being argued very often. One wonders why, yes? |

It DOES cheapen it because it disorts and bastardizes the very meaning of the word. Read the definition above, and honestly ask yourself how can same sex couples be "married". Call it a "civil union", call it whatever you want. Why does it cheapen it? Let's use an analogy. If you want to call yourself a medical doctor, you need to meet certain criteria. - have a high school diploma -- have a 4 year college degree in a pre-med, science, biology or similar field. -- graduated from medical school -- completed a residency -- been accepted into the profession by the AMA There are probably some I missed, but those are the basic 5 criteria. A boy scout who took a first aid couse is not a medical doctor. A high school chemistry student is not a doctor. A pre-med student is not a doctor. You gotta meet all 5 criteria to call yourself a doctor. If you only meet 4, that's OK. You're not an evil person. Just don't call yourself a doctor. Likewise if you are gay and happily coupled in a committed relationship don't call yourself "married". Start your own institution. It isn't just cultural neandethrals and ignorant queer bashers that are against the concept of "gay marriage", but the overwhelming majority of the thoughtful people in this country (even in California). Get used to it. Start your own institution Portland, OR. Be proud of who you are. |
