Gay Marriage Debate - Indianapolis, IN

There is no rational reason to deny gays the right to marry.

The constitution demands that all citizens receive equal protection under the law. This is not happening in the area of marriage laws, and it is time to repair the situation.

Let's examine the concept of legal standing a bit. What exactly will straight married couples lose if gay marriage is recognized? Hmmm. Will they lose the civil privilege of filing taxes jointly? Nope. Legal authority? Nope. Hospital visitation rights? Nope. ANY other privileges afforded to them by the state? Nope, nope, nope. Not a damn thing will be lost by straight married couples, other than EXCLUSIVITY. And exclusivity is not a civil right.

(In many kinds of legal cases, this would mean that straight married couples - or straight people in general - wouldn't even have legal standing to bring the issue to a court. They are not civilly affected by the matter, so there's nothing to remedy. I'd like to see someone make this argument, but I haven't seen it happen yet.)

The message is, it's about civil privileges granted by our secular state - that's it. It's a shame that churches happen to use the same word as civil laws, but you can go right on making the distinction in your mind - CHURCH marriage can still be somehow different than CIVIL marriage, if you prefer it, and if your church prefers it. Ya know,'cos the state isn't going to tell your church to change its doctrine. But the state can decide, as well it should, to make civil laws consistent with the single more fundamental core value in our constitution: Everyone is equal under the law. It's self-evident.

"Ew, ew, ick, ick," is not a basis for making laws. If it were, cauliflower would have long since been outlawed. Marriage laws need to be equal for all citizens.

Why do you think our government should have anything to do with mysticism? You sound very, very liberal. All our government should concern itself with, I think, is empirically verifiable or logically, rhetorically sound truths - nothing based on mystical knowledge. That's the true conservative stance.

The irony is, self-professed conservatives who are only religious reactionary nutcases will NEVER understand this. There are a few - a very few - smart *real* conservatives left around - the most prominent being the lawyer who recently finished arguing the case FOR recognition of same-sex marriage, against Prop8 in California, Ted Olson.

Same-sex marriage is not a liberal vs. conservative issue. It's a Dominionist/theocrat vs secular/separation of church/state issue.
