Farm Chores Debate - Somerset, KY

Kids should be taught to work period!!!!! No room here for STUPID debates!!!!!!! Whoever came up with this needs to find something to do!!!!

it is a down right shame that the government is getting by with telling parents how to raise their children and even denying them the rights of learning the age old skills of survival

Lord, where would I be without my country upbringing. Thank God, I was taught right from wrong, by my good old fashion married parents. My daddy once told me,That if I ever did anything that would cause me to be put in jail, It would be up to me to get myself out. My tail was whipped if I did wrong, and I was not a repeat offender.

Last I checked, it's still a free country...so leave up to the parents.

Is this just about a rumor or did someone in Congress actually propose something?

proposed adn then withdrawl before it even got to a committee vote becuase it was just that bad. Theres another thread about it around here

I was raised on a farm in a family with girls, no boys. So, us girls had to help in garden planting, hoeing, harvesting. We did every step of tobacco growing, from growing our own plants to setting it out, hoeing weeds, cutting & sticking it. And then hanging it & later stripping it.
We raised cattle as well & were responsible for their care & tending to their needs. As well as the horses.

I cannot say I always liked getting up early & doing chores. But I did enjoy it most of the time. I liked to bush-hog & I liked to load hay bails. I was very strong & muscular. Slim & in excellent physical shape. Still am.

That upbringing taught me how to be responsible. And to know consequences came from not doing my part. It was always a good feeling to know I was eating something I helped grow. Even the beef I ate was my duty to care for.

I would not trade all those experiences for anything else I've ever done or accomplished. It is a good thing to work up a sweat. A very good thing. And quite healthy to be outdoors getting very much needed exercise.

All parents should hope their kids can go help someone who has a big farm at least during the summer break. You learn respect not only for the land & what it offers, but respect for the animals and respect for the people who do the hard work to make it possible for us to feed ourselves & our families.

A priceless experience. It should be embraced!!

mom say i got adady, I never seen him.
my mom live with many men and they all nteach me differnt things.
My funniest dad told me to fall in school and say waz push by rich kid.
I trid to do this but my teracher wipped me for lies
my worse dad was the one that madd me go with him to his freind the pill man.
that thier man waz a freak, he would put his hads on me and tell me to be quit and i would get a ice cream pushup. I cannot even eat them today for those memerys.
I teach my kids when i can visit them to be good to wemon.
my son is 16 and he has a kid. the little girl say rape but we no better she just tri to get govmment help soocal workers tell me he is a threat to socity
I thing my grandpa had a farm but he would not allow my mom on his place after the shooting.
farm work was hard and not very helpful to me as achild.

this is too much, like someone said, i can't believe anyone is even considering something like this. its none of uncle sam's business!

I guess the same could be said for all of us then couldn't it. It sure didn't hurt me to work as a kid. But with a name like Lady GaGa I am sure the youth of today just love you. You see to be able to retire you have to have worked to begin with. Something I doubt you know anything about. By the way what is the point of your post are YOU afraid a little work might hurt you or some of your young friends.?

The "government" is already to involved in agriculture SO we don't need them telling the farmers what their kids can/can't do on the farm! There's NO BETTER PLACE to raise kids than on a "working farm"! I grew up on a tob/dairy farm in Ky! I learned a great deal about nature (cattle calving - how seeds germinate and turn into growing/living things/how weather plays such an important part as to the farmers life, etc!). It sure teaches "being responsible"! There's NO BETTER PLACE to raise children than on a working farm!

GREAT comments from you! You are lucky (like me) to be raised on a farm and learn the VALUABLE lessons through hard knocks! Those were HARD days back then BUT those days taught us some VALUABLE lessons about life!

I don't think the young kids have a clue as to the type of work was involved growing up on a farm. There were things you may have not wanted to do, but I liked to eat. If you never licked a salt block, ate ripe tomatoes, or had a rotten egg fight, baled hay, milked a cow, fed the chickens, got spurred by the rooster, swatted by a cow's tail, you missed out on country living. Early to bed, early to rise. Somehow we survived.
