Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Wednesday announced the expansion of the Amma Canteen scheme to nine other districts in the state while including more dishes in the menu of canteens here.

Chennai, May 14 : Anti-nuclear activists have sought details of the emergency plan from the authorities to check their preparedness in evacuating people living within the 16-km radius of the Tamil Nadu's 1,000 MW Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project , an activist said Tuesday.

The National Green Tribunal today refused to grant any interim relief to UK-based Vedanta Group company, Sterlite Industries Ltd, to commence operation of its copper smelting plant in Tamil Nadu's Tuticorin district.

Sterlite Industries, the country's largest copper smelter will remain shut for now as a local environmental court transferred a case over complaints about emissions to New Delhi, extending a month-long closure at the facility that meets half of the country's copper demand.
