Omars SOS brings langar from Amritsar

Following a phone call from the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister to his Punjab counterpart, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee on Friday sent langar for around 50,000 flood-affected people of Srinagar. Omar Abdullah, J&K chief minister, had on Thursday made a telephonic request to Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal, for the langar.

Amritsar Ludhiana picked to be developed as smart cities

The cities of Amritsar and Ludhiana meet the criterion for being developed as smart cities. At a meeting called by the union urban development ministry on Friday, seeking suggestions from various states, Punjab local bodies minister Anil Joshi said the two cities fell in the category of 10-lakh-plus population.

Ram Tirath issue Govt resolves dispute amicably

The dispute over the possession of various historical sites at the ancient Ram Tirath temple was amicably resolved on Wednesday following the intervention of the Punjab government. Fearing that the implementation of the Punjab and Haryana high court's recent directions in totality could lead to a lawand-order problem, the government thought it best to bring a compromise between petitioner Mahant Baldev Giri and the Bhagwan Valmiki Dhuna Sahib Management Trust.

Jaitley assured financial package for Punjab SAD

The Shiromani Akali Dal on Wednesday lashed out at the Congress for raking up the issue of union finance minister Arun Jaitley being critical of Punjab over fiscal matters, saying Jaitley had in fact assured the state of considering its case for a financial package after submission of report of the 14th Finance Commission. In a statement here, SAD treasurer and chief parliamentary secretary NK Sharma said the Congress was raising a hue and cry only to divert the public attention from the projects which the Modi government sanctioned for the state in 100 days of its governance.

Judgment reserved on plea for CBI probe

The Punjab and Haryana high court on Tuesday reserved its judgment in a case in which industrialist Jagjit Singh Chahal, a co-accused in the international drug racket being probed by the Punjab police's special investigating team , has sought a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the case. The judgment was reserved by justice K Kannan after arguments of all parties in the case concluded on Tuesday.

Court order to secure Ram Tirath not carried out

The Punjab government on Monday failed in its attempt to carry out the Punjab and Haryana high court orders and restore the possession of Dhuna Sahib and two other disputed sites at the ancient Ram Tirath shrine here to mahant Baldev Giri. At the end of the day, the disputed sites remained with Bhagwan Valmiki Dhuna Sahib Management Trust, with Giri watching helplessly from a distance.

As Valmikis get restive Punjab police on alert

Fearing a clash between two communities over the possession of a piece of land at Ram Tirath, 13 km from Amritsar, where Maharshi Valmiki is said to have written the Ramayana, the Punjab Armed Police here has been put on high alert. According to government sources, due to tension escalating over the land dispute, the Punjab government is anticipating a major law and order problem in near future, especially in Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ludhiana districts, dominated by the Valmiki community, who is opposed to giving possession of the land to the petitioner.

Incessant rain claims 22 lives in Punjab

Chandigarh: At least 22 people, including women and children, have been killed in different incidents of house and roof collapse following heavy rainfall across Punjab since Thursday, officials said here Saturday. Eight people from one family were killed when the roof of their house in Dhalla village near Batala town collapsed.

More showers can spell disaster for standing crops

When the rain was most required by the farmers, the monsoon eluded them and they went about pumping out precious groundwater so that their paddy and basmati crops could be saved.
