Watsonville celebrates Mexican Independence Day

North Avenue restaurant offers history, celebration for Mexican Independence Day
Sergio Sanchez, owner of Sergio's Place, 6966 W. North Ave., plans to dress up as Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Jesuit priest and leader of the Mexican War of Independence. "People think Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence day, but it's not," he said.

Celebrate Mexican independence day in Portland: El Grito 2014
El Grito & Fiestas Patrias is an annual holiday of Mexican Independence, celebrated in Portland at Pioneer Courthouse Square on Sept. 15. Just because Cinco de Mayo is the one big Mexican holiday mainstream America celebrates, and just because it sounds a whole lot like a Spanish version of the 4th of July, doesn't mean it has anything to do with independence.

Quick: when is Mexican Independence Day? With all that's been made of Cinco de Mayo NOT being it, you certainly weren't going to say May 5. But did any other date pop into your head? You've probably gathered it's coming up, or we wouldn't be talking about it. Current advertisements won't help you much, though.
