The Buffalo Sabres embraced a new owner with deep pockets last summer and spent big on free agency, only to stumble early and miss the playoffs.

Heading into the 2011-2012 Buffalo Sabres season, Luke Adam's emergence at the start of the season had some Sabres fans hoping that Adam may be part of the solution to the lack of quality centers the Sabres had on the roster.

The Sabres burst out of the gates on Monday night at First Niagara Center with 4 opening-period goals, including Brayden McNabb's first in the NHL, en route to a 4-2 win over Washington.

Think back to Sabres' rosters of past years. Three seasons ago, six seasons ago, ten seasons ago - all the way back to 2002.

It was a no-brainer at the time. Vancouver's bright young center Cody Hodgson for an under-motivated "tough guy" who was showing little actual toughness in Zack Kassian.
