Off-Season Game Plan: Stars

A strong playoff performance, reaching the Final Four for the first time since winning the Stanley Cup in 1999, gives the Dallas Stars high expectations heading into next season.

“It was great to see him score, but he has some things in his game to clean up”

Dallas Stars defenseman Philippe Boucher's roller-coaster season continues.

Boucher, who has missed 44 games because of shoulder injuries this season, scored his first goal since Oct. 31 in the Stars' 4-2 loss to Phoenix on Friday.

But he admitted he still has some ways to go before returning to full strength.

Boucher showed the offensive flair that helped earn him an All-Star berth last season, finishing off a 2-on-1 break with a wrist shot past Phoenix goalie Mikael Tellqvist to tie the score at 2-2 early in the second period. Read more

“When you get jump, you get confidence that you can do something with the puck. When I don't have that, I get the puck and look up and someone's there”

Niklas Hagman knew he wasn't playing the way he should be. His opportunistic style wasn't evident, and the goals that once were coming at a decent clip had disappeared.

The Dallas Stars forward was missing, as he called it, 'the jump.' That's what gets him going, his calling card. But in the past two games, 'the jump' looks like it's returning.

Hagman scored his second goal in as many nights Sunday, breaking a pointless streak that had gone a season-long eight games. For Hagman, who now has 27 goals and looked more like his normal self over the weekend, it's a sign that his game may be returning. Read more

“Teams will try to shut you down, but you have to be ready for it”

Mike Ribeiro is a targeted man. That comes with 20-plus goal seasons and dazzling passes. And a $5 million per-year price tag. And while he's had his dips, lately the Dallas Stars center has been soaring again.

Ribeiro had three assists Saturday afternoon in the Stars' 7-2 victory against the Los Angeles Kings, giving him a team- and career-high 56 for the season. Ribeiro has dealt with opponents playing him tighter over the last few months. But recently, there hasn't been much to deter him. Read more

“You can't be satisfied with just being a solid player”

Loui Eriksson knows his place on this Stars team. Recently, that place has been right in front of the net.

He has made the most of his time there, scoring six goals in his past five games. But as he figures it, he has no choice but to go there; after all, that's where his center's passes will be waiting.

Eriksson has found his offensive rhythm lately, one more player who has made the most of his time with Mike Ribeiro and Brenden Morrow. He's the third right wing to get some time with those two, following Jere Lehtinen and Antti Miettinen. Read more

The art of war

“Only if you are in your position”

FRISCO -- Forty-six seconds, forty-one punches and 51,262 views on youtube.com illustrate why Stars forward Krys Barch is the last guy you want to fight.

He is scrappy, ornery and willing.

And on Jan. 15, in Anaheim, he gave Ducks enforcer Brad May a fight worthy of his stature, trading rights and lefts and landing big blows and going long after exhaustion had settled into his bones.

This is Barch's job and he does it well.

'You know certain times when a fight is going to happen, if you take a liberty with somebody on this team I am going to come asking for you and vice versa,' Barch said. 'People should know there is a reason when you fight.' Read more

Biff! Pow! Ow

Until you have stared down knuckles aimed at your face, you cannot fathom what Krys Barch does for the Stars. I know. This is exactly the position I found myself in a week ago. 'That is scary,' I said. 'Only if you are in your position,' Barch said. How exactly we arrived at this point, with me about to eat knuckles if this were an actual game, is a result of much prep, skill and guts. And Barch took us step-by-step on how to win a hockey fight. Once you understand everything required, I almost guarantee you will never again say, 'What a bunch of goons.' 10D Read more
