Center Nylander is placed on waivers
Michael Nylander was placed on waivers Saturday by the Washington Capitals, a move that could expedite a resolution to an awkward situation that has hung over the team since training camp.
If Nylander is claimed, the team that picks him up will assume the remainder of his $5.5 million salary (and pay the Capitals a waiver fee of just more than $3,000). If Nylander is not claimed, he will remain on Washington's roster, but the path will be cleared for the Capitals to loan the 37-year-old center to a team outside of the NHL.

Walk into the Washington Capitals dressing room at Kettler Capitals Iceplex and you won't find a single player feeling sorry for himself or his team. The Capitals may have to play without the two-time reigning league MVP, Alex Ovechkin, for a little while, but they aren't about to panic.

Belatedly, Bourque Has Chance to Make Impression
After missing two preseason games with concussion-like symptoms, left wing Chris Bourque is expected to return to the lineup when the Washington Capitals host the New York Rangers in the exhibition finale on Sunday.
'This was probably the one camp where I had a chance to crack the opening lineup,' said Bourque, a second-round pick in 2004. 'That's not gone, but it definitely put a dent in my training-camp hopes.'
Bourque, in a tight battle with Alexandre Giroux, Quintin Laing and Keith Aucoin for the two remaining forward spots on the opening night roster, was upset by the hit that led to his injury.
