One year ago at this time, the Islanders made the stunning .announcement of their decision to buy out the final four years of controversial captain Alexei Yashin 's 10-year contract.
Given the hoopla that came with many of the Ottawa Senators top draft picks over the years, especially in the early going, you would be excused to think that the club would have won a Stanley Cup by now.

Hockey Fix: The week in the NHL
Washington superstar Alex Ovechkin signed a mammoth contract extension last week that he personally negotiated with the team. The 13-year, $124 million deal pays Ovechkin $9 million per season for the next six seasons, then $10 million for each of the next seven.
It is the second-longest contract in NHL history to Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro's 15-year, $67.5 million deal. But Ovechkin's extension is more reminiscent of the previous longest, for a fellow Russian. In 2001 the Islanders signed forward Alexei Yashin to a 10-year contract for $87.5 million. Yashin had been a standout for Ottawa, but his numbers dropped off after signing the deal. The Islanders bought out the last four years of the contract this summer, and Yashin is not currently playing in the NHL. Read more
