Strokes rise sharply in China economic boom: study

“Because fewer people are dying of stroke, the need to prevent recurrent strokes in survivors is growing. In addition, the need for rehabilitation services for stroke survivors also is rising”

HONG KONG (Reuters) - The number of strokes caused by brain blood clots rose by almost 9 percent each year in Beijing in the two decades to 2004, researchers say, blaming the trend on economic prosperity and lifestyle changes.

While the number of people dying from these strokes is falling as a result of better health care, authorities should do more to reduce risk, including by improving diets, the Chinese researchers wrote in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

"The challenges include better control of stroke risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and obesity," wrote Dong Zhao, lead author of the study. Read more

Bra size at 20 may predict Type 2 diabetes risk in later life: study

“I would look at this as an interesting observation that needs to be explored and understood better. And I would certainly not be alarmed if I was a woman who happened to have a D cup as opposed to an A cup. And I think that's as far as I could go”

- A woman's bra size at age 20 may predict her risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life, with larger cup size linked to higher rates of diabetes, a new study suggests.

After accounting for factors known to increase likelihood of diabetes - things like a family history of the disease, body mass index, level of physical activity, smoking status and waist-to-hip measurements - the researchers said the figures still show that women who wore B, C and D cups developed the disease at higher rates than women who wore A cup bras. Study finds more elderly develop diabetes

“The prevalence of diabetes mellitus is increasing, in part because of population aging, but also in younger persons”

By Andrew Stern

CHICAGO (Reuters) - More elderly Americans are contracting diabetes and the majority develop complications such as heart disease that might be prevented if they properly monitored their health, a researcher said on Monday.

The study of Medicare beneficiaries found 2.7 percent of a group of 1.5 million enrollees in the government-funded insurance program for the elderly were diagnosed with diabetes in 2003, compared to 2.2 percent diagnosed in 1994.

Overall, one-quarter of those 65 or older had type-2 diabetes in 2003, up from 15 percent in 1994, the report said. The 1.5 million people studied represented a group of 5 percent of Medicare enrollees whose health is being tracked by the program. Read more

Caffeine ups blood sugar level in diabetics: study

“What we are really showing here is that when people with type-2 diabetes who are regular coffee drinkers drink coffee, it produces an elevation in their glucose throughout the day above what it is if they don't have caffeine”

By Will Dunham

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Cutting down on caffeine could help people with the most common form of diabetes better control their blood sugar levels, researchers said on Monday.

Giving caffeine to a small group of people with type 2 diabetes caused their levels of the blood sugar glucose to rise through the day, especially after meals, researchers at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, found.

"Caffeine appears to disrupt glucose metabolism in a way that could be harmful to people with type-2 diabetes," James Lane, a Duke medical psychologist who led the study, said in a telephone interview. Read more
