When anti smoking people were educating, they were very successful at getting people to quit, or not start. Once they started legislating draconian smoking bans using law enforcement and snitchlines, they are creating a lot of hatred for themselves.

The local bars that ignore the ban are being treated as local freedom fighters and are very popular, even for non smokers.

So, the smoking rate has gone UP in the UK after the smoking ban, UP in Ireland, following the smoking ban, and UP in the US following massive smoking bans. If I were an epidemologist, I would conclude that smoking bans appear to raise the risk of increasing smoking rates.

As one who loves history...this is simply a pattern.

German smoking rates rose dramatically in the first six years of Nazi rule, suggesting that the propaganda campaign launched during those early years was largely ineffective.(4)(5)

German smoking rates rose faster even than those of France, which had a much weaker anti-tobacco campaign.

German per capita tobacco use between 1932 and 1939 rose from 570 to 900 cigarettes a year, whereas French tobacco consumption grew from 570 to only 630 cigarettes over the same period.(9)

Smith et al suggested that smoking may have functioned as a kind of cultural resistance,(4)

you mean this one?

On May 7, 2008 the U.S. government adopted an updated national tobacco dependency treatment policy, a policy that has sellers of FDA approved quit smoking products (Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline and Johnson & Johnson) celebrating, while leaving those dedicated to non-pharmacology quitting shaking their heads in disbelief.

Written by a 24-member private sector panel of "experts" whose extensive pharmaceutical industry financial ties have the new policy mired in controversy, the 276 page updated "Guideline" again proclaims, that with few exceptions, all smokers trying to quit should be directed to go out and purchase pharmaceutical quitting products.

The disclosures fail to provide readers awareness of funds provided to panel members or their organizations by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), an organization with strong ties to Johnson & Johnson, the company which likely holds the largest share of the U.S. nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) products market. But why care?
