New plant gives hope to Guatemalan coffee growers
Guatemala City, Aug 12 On a plantation called Majadas del Tesoro, some 238 km east of Guatemala City, a group of coffee growers has given new hope to the sector in this country with the discovery of a strain of the coffee plant resistant to roya, a highly destructive fungus.
Rust Fungus No Match for New Coffee Plant in Guatemala
Guatemala's National Coffee Association, or Anacafe, announced the existence of a new variety of coffee plant immune to roya, a fungus that causes coffee rust and which damaged crops on 70 percent of Guatemalan plantations in 2012 and 40 percent in 2013.
