Woods leads U.S. romp; Johnson stumbles
1 2 1 2 San Francisco, Calif. - The fans lining the green at the 14th hole at Harding Park Golf Course on Sunday looked to the giant video board next to the fairway. On the screen, Tiger Woods was standing over a 3-foot putt on No. 13 that would clinch his match with Y.E. Yang and the Presidents Cup for the American team. Woods sank the putt and the crowd let out a groan. They wanted to see Woods in person. Unfortunately for them, Woods rarely made it to the final holes as he won all five of his matches, becoming the third golfer to do so at the Presidents Cup. Zach Johnson, a former Drake golfer from Cedar Rapids, couldn't match Woods. He fell to Tim Clark of South Africa 4 and 3. Johnson won only one hole as Clark drained several long putts and had four birdies on his first seven holes to go 5 up. But thanks in large part to Woods and Phil Mickelson, who went 4-0-1 on the week, the U.S. won 19. The Americans have dominated this series, winning six of the eight competitions with one draw. 'We played great as a team,' Woods said. 'The captain (Fred Couples) did some great pairings, put us together with some guys that we knew we could play really well with. And the guys made putts.' International captain Greg Norman said Woods' performance was a key. 'That's what you expect out of your No. 1 player in the world,' Norman said. 'I think that was the swing factor. Woods won all five matches. If he only wins three out of those five, then the whole match is a lot closer than what it is.' Johnson's match wasn't close. On the 15th, he made his birdie putt, then watched Clark hole his putt from the fringe to clinch the match. Johnson flopped onto his back on the green, an act he said wasn't intentional. 'My knees gave out,' Johnson said with an embarrassed laugh. 'It wasn't an act. I was just like, 'Are you kidding me?' It was fitting the way it ended. He played great and deserved to win.' Clark got birdies on 1, 2, 5, 7, 10, 12, 13 and 15. 'Through 11 holes, I'm one under, he's six - I think he made three or four putts outside of 30, 40 feet,' Johnson said. 'He also hit it good. He didn't do anything wrong. It was just really, really impressive.' Clark said putts were key. 'For the first time all week, the putts started to go,' he said. 'The first few days, a lot lipped out, but today, unfortunately for Zach, they all seemed to go in. He played great on the back and he showed what sort of fight he has. 'I tell you, if I had not kept on the pedal, I would have been in trouble.' Woods' pairing with Yang was a rematch of sorts from the final round of the PGA Championship in August. That time, Yang handed Woods his first loss in a major when leading after three rounds. This time, Woods hammered Yang 6 and 5. Yang won the first hole and didn't win another as Woods ran off five birdies over holes 5-13. 'He birdied the first and I made a mistake there, and from then on, I actually played pretty good,' Woods said. Mickelson beat Retief Goosen 2 and 1. Mickelson's wife Amy, who has been undergoing cancer treatment in Houston, paid a surprise visit, arriving on Saturday night. Mickelson said she hid in the bathroom of his hotel room and gave him a scare. He wasn't as happy with his play Sunday. 'I was a few under, but I didn't putt the way I had the first few matches,' he said. 'But it was a fun week, and I'm really happy to be part of this team and to see the way our guys played today.' Anthony Kim, Stewart Cink, Hunter Mahan and Sean O'Hair also won their matches. O'Hair had a surprisingly easy time with Ernie Els, winning 6 and 4. Kim beat Robert Allenby 5 and 3. Geoff Ogilvy and Ryo Ishikawa won for the International team.
