Canon 4Q Profit Edges Up 1.8 Percent
Canon Inc. said Wednesday its profit edged up 1.8 percent in the fourth quarter from the year before, helping it reach a record annual profit for the eighth straight year.
The company also forecast steady profit growth in the year ahead despite anxiety about a global economic slowdown and the strong yen, which could drag on exports.
Net income rose to 127.8 billion yen ($1.197 billion) in the October-December quarter from 125.6 billion yen a year earlier, the Japanese electronics maker said in a release. Sales of office equipment and cameras largely offset a rise in research and development expenses. Read more

Calif. Official Questions Lottery Bash
“There are different games introduced every month that many of the employees don't know enough about”
The state controller says the California Lottery owes the treasury tens of thousands of dollars for prime rib meals and swanky gifts handed out during an employee recognition dinner last fall.
Lotto officials threw the $43,000 bash to commemorate the game's $20 billion contribution to education. But Controller John Chiang says the party went beyond what's acceptable, and he wants most of the money returned to his office.
Lotto workers set up a mock Big Spin game and awarded employees prizes such as a Nintendo Wii, iPods, digital cameras and gift cards to Best Buy and Borders. Some 300 state workers attended the $32-a-plate dinner. Read more

Fujitsu reorganizes semiconductor operations
TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese electronics firm Fujitsu Ltd said on Monday it would put its struggling semiconductor operations into a new unit, in a move that could smooth the way for partnerships with other chip makers.
Fujitsu's business building system chips, used in products ranging from digital cameras to supercomputers, has suffered from falling prices and the high cost of keeping up with the latest technology.
The company also said it would transfer development and test production of state-of-the art system chips to its Mie plant in central Japan from a technology centre in Tokyo, at a cost of some 10 billion yen ($94 million). Read more

Israel Launches Advanced Spy Satellite
Israel launched an advanced spy satellite Monday that will be able to track events in Iran, the country it considers its top foe, even at night and in cloudy weather, defense officials said.
The TECSAR satellite is of particular importance for Israel because it can be used to keep tabs on Iran's nuclear program, which the U.S. and Israel fear is a cover for pursuing nuclear weapons, they said.
The satellite, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries, operates with a special radar system, allowing it to view much more than existing Ofek satellites that use cameras, the officials said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press. Read more
