Startup develops optical zoom lens for smartphones

A Silicon Valley startup is developing an optical zoom lens unit that's thin enough to slip inside of a smartphone and won't protrude when used. DynaOptics has spent two years working on the device, which is based on an Alvarez lens, a uniquely shaped lens that produces optical zoom through lateral movement of two lens halves that sit together.

Toshiba rolls out 20Mpx CMOS image sensor for smartphones

The sensor joins Toshiba's recently announced 8Mpx and 13Mpx 1.12 back-side illuminated CIS solutions, which enable low-power, high-performance image capture, and video recording for handheld mobile devices. The T4KA7 employs high-speed circuit technology that delivers a frame rate of 22fps at full-resolution image capture - an improvement of 83 per cent compared to the company's previous 20Mpx sensor.
