Workers scrimp to survive in cities
Workers from Hanoi’s North Thang Long Industrial Zone share a meal in a small lodging in Kim Chung Commune, Dong Anh District.
A worker in Hai Phong City said she only earned enough to rent a tiny area in a lodging, just over one square meter.
Nguyen Thi Tham, who works for the Sao Vang Company in An Lao District, said she pays VND50,000 (US$3) a month to share a nine-square-meter room with seven other workers.
She said her roommates also had to be very careful about what food they bought.
Tham is among many workers in the northern provinces who are struggling to meet rising costs while many workers in Ho Chi Minh City are seeking new jobs in their hometown to reduce expenses.
According to the National Trade Union, the income of workers from industrial zones and export processing zones is still low and doesn’t match the cost of living.
The union said the average income has increased over 12 percent every year, but workers have to watch every cent to survive.
Living costs
Many workers from North Thang Long Industrial Zone in Hanoi say they can only afford cheap vegetables to eat instead of meat or fish.
“I don’t know the price of meat recently,” said Duong, a worker who came from Vinh Phuc Province.
“I only know about tofu, which is VND1,500 for a small piece.”
Duong said she bought tofu to eat instead of meat because it was much cheaper.
A small trader at Kim Chung Market near the industrial zone said tofu was a top-selling food while more expensive meat and fish was not in demand.
She said workers preferred to buy cheap vegetables.
Nguyen Thi Hai, a worker from Lifan Motorbike Manufacturing Company in Hung Yen Province said she seldom ate meat and fish although she was pregnant.
Hai said her husband was also a worker and they had to save money for their baby.
A worker from Pioneer Company in Hai Phong’ s Nomura Industrial Zone, Thuy, said she and four other workers rented a small lodging at An Duong District for VND500,000 per month, for VND100,000 each.
Thuy also said many rooms were emptied recently because workers had squeezed in together to save their wages.
A recent survey at industrial zones in Hanoi, Hung Yen and Hai Phong showed most workers had an average salary between VND1 million to 1.5 million ($60-90).
Home sweet home
An increasing number of workers in HCMC industrial zones are now returning to lower paid jobs in their hometowns where the cost of living is more affordable.
Many are going to new industrial zones in provinces that are close to their family homes where they don’t have to pay rent.
A worker for a company in HCMC, Tran Van Ho, said he had decided to resettle in his hometown in Quang Ngai Province after working in the city for 10 years.
Ho said his wife was also a worker and their total income of VND2 million ($120) was not enough to send their child to school.
The couple decided to return to their hometown and ask for jobs in Dung Quat Economic Zone.
Many other workers said they could manage to stay and continue working in HCMC, but they had decided to return to their hometown, because it was more beneficial to them.
“Sometimes I could save up to VND600,000 per month working at home,” said Hoa, a worker from Long An Province who used to work at HCMC Tan Tao Industrial Zone.
“I could never save that much before.”
Hoa said she had worked in HCMC for three years with a salary of VND1 million, but the money hadn’t kept up with the rising cost of living.
She said her current salary at a company in Duc Hoa District was less than VND1 million, but she didn’t have to pay rent anymore.
