Intacto mi pana. No hay peor ciego que el que no quiere ver. Escribir estupideces en Topix para apoyar a la estupidez que Chavez esta haciendo con Venezuela es facilito.

As per Keith goes, yes Venezuela is full of nice places and people. It is how people live that makes it so dificult. All you need is to experience the crime and insecurity, the traffic, the roads, the corruption, to break anybody's will. Unless, of course, he is priviledged enough to live above that. Like all government Chavistas are.

Angrier than ever,

Chavez is a pretty intelligent man, who has reinstated some dignity for those who have been usurped by the great disparity between rich and poor in venezuela, and the white venezolano and the moreno. He knows his history and his folklore.

I spend alot of time in Venezuela, to listen to the barking of US citizens that are upset with Chavez, it just show the arrogance that we posess.

Where is socialismo? Where at Sambil? CCCT?, or San Ignacio?

C'mon, go visit the missions. See how handicapped are being integrated into society. Go see Barrio Adentro. Go see the building that is going on in the barrios. The slums were not created by Chavez.

Look at the [political history of Venezuela. Read Chavez Sin Uniforme by Alberto Barreras Tyska. Stop the old Miami Cuban rhetoric. Venezuela is not Cuba, and it will never be. Dont let peoples criticism of Chavez keep you uninformed.

Every political leader has his critics. The missions are working and serving those in needs. The rich have already taken their money to Miami.

Go live in Venezuela. It is paradise. maybe not Caracas, but Merida, Los Nevados, Adricoro. There is plenty to do. It is not an armed struggle, but a fiscal reform.

How do I know? I just returned yesterday after 2 months. It is expensive if you eat in restaurants, but it is okay if you eat the wonderful empanadas and arepas. The people are warm and friendly. So I see that many who write here have never been to Venezuela.

Dont be discouraged. Go see for yourself! Have fun, and enjoy Canaima. Viva Venezuela...And do you know who manufactures all those red shirts in Venezuela, the same people who form the oppposition. Noone is leaving Venezuela in droves. In fact many are returning. Get your information straight!

First of all the oiil is Venezolano, not that of the gringo as it has historically been during past presidencies! Ah..and the manifesto communismo? Where is it active in Venezuela? You claim that Venezuela is coimmunist? Where in Sambil or in the country club. Que cosa!! Sounds like the same rhetoric of the Cuban nationals who have whined for decades, but have now taken control of Miami as Fidel has of Cuba.

Obviously you would rather criticize Chavez just as Guliuani did, until we found out that Guilaiani's law firm was on Chavez's bank roll!! vAh, are you gaining from the Chavistas too?

Obviously you have not been in the barrios to work in any social project., because your eyes and your anger are redder than anything Chavez can be! Obviouslu it is easier to negate any progress from the Chavez presidency as you are comoido now in your condo!

Los +mendigos de los missiones? Obviously no tienes cajones a a[potyar su propio gente menos que el Country Club..Que verquenza. Doesnt matter if you were born in Venezuela, you are outt of touch with the reality! Socialismo de Sambil!!! Socialismo de San Ignacio...que arrogancia !!

Are you crazy!? No one owns a gun in Venezuela legally, just the military, militia and criminals! Personal freedoms? What the heck are you talking about? Hugo a good man! Dude I suggest you move to Caracas and see the slums that still rims the city even after so many years that Chavez has been the leader of Venezuela! I doubt you will feel the same after living there for a year or so. If you have not read about how Hugo is pushing to have just one political party there then you obviously just another blind zombie.
Wow. He says he wants to know more, states his opinion, and asks some questions, and for that you insult him and spew a bunch of noise you’ve probably only read about. Have YOU ever even been to Venezuela? I’m not going to defend Chavez, but neither am I going to defend the corrupt leaders that came before him (that the U.S. liked). The country is still a democracy, and Chavez was elected by the people. If they want a more socialist or even communist government, it’s their choice. You don't like it and want to insult others rather than have a useful dialog, then have fun, but I doubt your going to convince anyone that does not already hold your views.

Socialism can work, but like any economic system it depends greatly on the political system under which it functions. Socialism in Cuba functions under an authoritarian government; even capitalism often fails under authoritarian governments.
Venezuela is a democracy and the people have chosen their current socialistic path. If it they cannot make it work, then the can elect to change directions again, it’s their choice. The danger is in other countries (specifically the U.S.), and wealthy interests interfering with Venezuelans progress because of its immense oil wealth. You must understand, many do not want Venezuelan socialism to work because of the precedence it will set in the region.

lol I hope this is a VERY bad joke because Venezuela is a terrible place to live! The government is corrupt and the country is full of poverty and slums! Crime is a common thing in Venezuela and if I were you, I'd make a better choice. The prices on electronics are also OUTRAGEOUS!

Hi Keith,
I am a an American in Venezuela, and let me tell you, Poor people love him (and I mean REALLY poor), and people that make over $3000 per year HATE HIM (unless they are making money through the Strong-Arm Chavez Gov't). The best way to describe Venezuela is a crying shame! So much oil money, and where does it go? I see LOTS of guns every day, but they are illegal for a citizen to carry on the street. Robbery, assault and murder haapen everywhere and every day. Houses are double triple and quadruple locked, especially when the people are home due to crime. The infrastructure of the country has had NO MAINTENANCE for decases, the roads, electric, sewer, and water systems are ALL in disrepair. You can listen to Chavez, but remember, when his lips are moving, he's lying! He is a man of positive words, and negative actions. The man talks and talks and talks every day, but doesn't listen. Why are the immature governments of the Americas so into power and control? I suppose because they just haven't learned as well as Europe over the past few hundred years that war is foolish. Deal with what you've got, and make friends with your international neighbors. The world is finite, so these arrogant leaders need to be either learn to work with what they've got or let someone else have at it. The main difference between Chavez and the avaerage American citizen is that he is live on TV everyday telling people he can't wait for Bush to be out of office, and we Americans are only wishing it. Remember most Americans are good people, Bush just isn't one of them!(ps. it would be really great if you would visit Venezuela, I'd love to show you around--you'd be in shock!)

Good night, please consider this. First for forsee the future we have to look back at the history. Europeans did BY force enter North America..today the US. Look at your history..only fighting..with the local indians..later you US did have so MANY civil wars..to end where you are. So give other countries the space..to fight for their rights..It is incredible how the US (not all think) they are a supirior rase. That the world has to bow for YOU. Venezuela..was ruled and bought by rich countries like yours (US)now. Like he US politcs use your TAX money to party BOM all over the world. Man I can write a book..so please everybody should start cleaning ther own GARDEN. Also me..goodnight.

TRUE, the past is a good book to read. And ALSO true MANY bad things have occurred IN the US and BY the US in the past and present... the US is no Angel! Chavez IS making changes, strengthening the OIL industry, B U T ! WHY is the money being used for ANYTHING other than infrastructure! We can ALL CRY about the crimes of the past, but TODAY'S CRIME is what CHAVEZ AND BUSH are doing to their countries PEOPLE. They play like little boys throwing dirt in each others faces, while the people of their respective countries sit idly (watching sit-coms in the US, and listening to Chavez propaganda while the bolivar continues to devalue (1996 $1-540, now $1=4900 in Venezuela). Chavez doesn't have to LIKE the US, but it would serve his people's best-interest if he would act PROFESSIONALLY and DIPLOMATICALLY. As for the US thinking it's a superior race, I'd disagree, it's a social experiment that isn't working the greatest. There are White-Black, Black-Hispanic, Black-Asian, Asian-Asian, White-Asian, White-Hispanic issues throughout the country. As for me, I like everyone, until they show their colors, and mistreat me or others, and THAT is what I see here. Chavez is a militaristic thug, robbing his people WHILE developing and exploiting the OIL industry. Like I've said before, a person really needs to BE HERE to see what's going on, because IF YOU'RE POOR, it looks GREAT, but IF YOU HAVE A NET WORTH OF >$1000, you're either ANTI-Chavista or on the take!

Keith and Gray,
I all fairness, no one has really done anything to help you. Here my advice:
I say you just go. Make a reservation and go. Let me give you a few pointers:
- Make your reservation thru Houston, Miami and NYC are usually very congested and tickets are more expensive. Caracas is your destination. You will be arriving at around 11pm.
- Before you travel, make sure that you buy at least 12 bottles of Buchanans special reserve 18 year old. Depeding on who you find when you get there, you may need to show your appreciation by giving a small token, don't worry, you will know when to use them. This token in particular is highly desired.
- Once you get to "Maiquetia", the airport is called International Simon Bolivar but everyone calls it Maiquetia. Anyway, when you get there, just make sure you get your bearings quick. Most people will understand english but will not speak it. In any event, you will be able to easy make it to the taxi line.
- Once in the taxi line, make sure you get your cameras out of the bags. You may want to snap a few ones on the way to Caracas, the little lights on the mountains are actual neighborhoods. Some are really nice. Don't try to explain too much to the cabbie regarding the address where you're going (more on that below), just try to agree on a fair price.
- You can tell cabbie to drop you off in Petare. There are many neighborhoods between the airport and Petare, but in order to get to this one, you will need to go through the entire valley and city.
- Even at that time at night, Petare will have a lot of traffic and a lot of people around. It is a nice neighborhood. I think, in fact, that Sean Penn and Kevin Spacey may have actually visited there first. Not sure. Anyway, make sure to ask the cabbie to drop you off in the "redoma". Now from here you have a few options: You can walk to the Jose Felix Rivas barrio (neighborhood) or you can take another short ride to La Bombilla, another favorite. PLEASE make sure you go there unarmed. As some people adviced, it is not a good idea to carry a weapon, and if you don't have a permit, well, who knows, you can get in a lot of trouble as nobody actually does it.
- As for accomodations, I recommend you do a "pension" rather than a hotel. I mean, if you want the real experience. This one may be a bit risky since they are usually first-in first served and I don't think you can make a reservation. In any event, I recommend you walk around towards Jose Felix Rivas barrio, under the "elevado" (you'll see what it is) and take lots of pictures, it is nice. Send them to me to deopoelano@hotmail.com... PLEASE. Oh, one more thing, a lot of people that do this walk end up lost in Bello Monte, just don't go over the first flight of stairs.
- The next day, you need to plan to go to Simon Bolivar's house (yeap, he was THAT small), the panteon (where he rests) and the Bolivar Plaza. You can do this wlaking. Then you should go to Miraflores, to see the place where Chavez governs the country. By the way, while you are there make sure to go over the Llaguno bridge, ask the locals why this bridge is important, take some pictures from the bridge facing down, it's a great shot.
- After this, just find a government office and ask how you can help, they will take care of you.
Hope this helps.
You will be dead, no shoes, no camera, no bags, if you get out of the cab, or take photos in these places. Good luck!
