How is it that the military does not overthrow this dude? To me the Military was the most professional in all of South America. I know the dude has packed the upper echelon with his people, but man what is going on? I feel so sorry for your country. Peace!

First, although I want the guy out I don't want him overthrown by some military coup; what that will accomplish is to replace one tyrant by another. No, we need to somehow get this guy out by democratic means... I know, difficult under the present circumstances.

Second, the current military, as you well point out, is corrupt with perhaps a very few exceptions. Chavez has made sure this is the case. He has replaced the old military with his minions and has placed many of them in public posts giving them access to power and money. Many of these people have become corrupt in this way.

Third, I am afraid that because of the reason I just expressed, the military and also many of Chavez's people in government, must deffend the current status quo with their life. They well know that the moment this government falls, they are going to be prosecuted and thrown in jail. The level of corruption in this government simply has no precedent in the history of Venezuela.

So, I am afraid the future looks very grim for Venezuelans. I hope I am wrong.

The future looks worse right now for Americans than it does for Venezuelans unless, Obama wins the next election.

You are unfortunately correct.It's grim.
Raul Castro surrounds himself with his military cronies and so does Chavez.
I doubt you will get rid of Chavez 20 years from now he will still be there.

'cause the military and must of the people in Venezuela are Pro Chavez and believe me none of them wants the Adecos and Copeyanos back in power, only a small elite, the present opposition can get benefits out of that, they don't even have a respectable Lider. Don't feel sorry for the country 'cause they're doing all right.

You dumbass Americans should worry about America first before you start trying to tell other countries who they should have in power. George Idiot Bush is the worst leader ever in the history of the west. FU** OFF, leave other countries and put your own house in order. No one gives a darm what the hell the Great Satan thinks anymore.

A new editorial from Veneconomia showing us how well the country is:

Justice in Venezuela, like Mambrú, left and no one knows when it will be back.

The foundation of any system of justice is equality before the law. But, paraphrasing Orwell, in Venezuela, Hugo Chávez is “more equal.” This is the perception of the majority of Venezuelans, both on the personal level and on the institutional, business, social, political, and economic fronts.

One concrete example of this lack of justice on the economic front is the Bolivarian Government’s rejection of arbitration as a fair, impartial way of settling disputes; particularly when it is public knowledge that, during these ten long years with Chávez at the helm, the contractual and constitutional rights of companies (both domestic and foreign) have been systematically violated without a peep of protest from any institution. The reason for this silence is obvious: all those institutions obey the President of the Republic to the letter.

Any list of companies whose economic rights have been violated would have to include the Mexican cement company, Cemex. The government suddenly announced its expropriation and immediately proceeded to send in the military to occupy the facilities as a “preventive” measure. Meanwhile it is threatening the company with lawsuits for alleged environmental and tax offenses, which anyone can see are simply intended to put on the pressure. What is worse, everyone knows that, in Venezuela, Cemex will find no institution that will guarantee its rights.

That list would also have to include the thousands of farmers who have had their land and property seized via expropriations, confiscations, and orchestrated invasions, mostly directed from government offices. The most recent are the invasions of farms in Perijá by members of the Ykpa tribe, who have received the unconditional support of the President regardless of who is in the right or who is breaking the law.
Other cases that should be on this list are: 1)Ávila Mágica, whose concession was revoked a year ago without prior notice and with no right to protest; and since then, not only has the company not been paid for its property, but the former concessionaires are being threatened with fines for alleged breaches of contract and tax offenses; 2) RCTV, not only was it stripped of its space on the radio spectrum for which it held a permit for more than 50 years, but the government also illegally took possession of its equipment and antennae to “lend” them, apparently for life, to the government-sponsored TVES; and 3) General Motors and CocaCola, which have been subjected to ongoing harassment from “parallel” trade unions controlled by the government, as a result of which their operations have been interrupted. It will come as no surprise if they end up in the hands of the government, as happened with Constructora Nacional de Válvulas, today an inoperative community enterprise called Inveval.

There are many more that are eligible for this list, former companies that have been swallowed up by the lack of democratic game rules and a nonexistent rule of law. You know who they are.

... And, the country is doing so all right that this is what AFP published today:

Nationalizations scaring investors away from Venezuela: analysts

CARACAS (AFP)— The recent nationalizations of strategic sectors in Venezuela are frightening away foreign companies and turning the country into South America's worst destination for foreign investment, analysts say.
President Hugo Chavez's decision to take over electricity, oil, steelmaking, cement and telephone enterprises over the past year may strengthen the "revolutionary" drive towards building a socialist nation, but it also drives off multinationals which have the funds to boost economic activity.
Several groups, notably US energy companies ExxonMobil and ConocoPhilips, have simply abandoned operations there.
Others, such as cement makers LaFarge of France and Holcim of Switzerland, have quietly accepted discounted compensation for their expropriated Venezuelan subsidiaries.
On Monday, Venezuela's government said it was resuming negotiations with the Mexican cement group Cemex in an effort to reach a settlement over its seized subsidiary.
The state domination of the country's economy -- which also extends to controls on prices and foreign currency exchanges that limit corporate competition and profitability -- is severely dampening investment from outside, the analysts say.
"Foreign investment should be at least three percent of gross domestic product, around six billion dollars. We're only at 10 percent of that figure," one economist, Orlando Ochoa, told AFP.
According to the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), direct foreign investment in Venezeula amounted to 400 million dollars last year -- the lowest amount recorded for any country in South America.
In comparison, neighboring Colombia had investment of 8.2 billion dollars, and Brazil had 37.4 billion dollars.
In fact, out of a list of 34 countries evaluated by UNCTAD, Venezuela comes second-last, only above Hungary, in terms of direct foreign investment.
Experts say the wave expropriations have left a sense of legal insecurity for companies, making them feel their investments are vulnerable.
The biggest companies left in the country are subsidiaries of the food groups Nestle of Switzerland and Cargill of the United States, Spanish telephone company Movistar, the US pharmaceutical groups Pfizer and Merck, the US automobile giant General Motors, and the Spanish bank Banco Bilbao Vizcaya, according to Venezuela's National Investment Promotions Council.
For Luis Vicente Leon, head of the Datanalisis polling firm, foreign corporate chiefs "develop investments with a view to expected returns and to being protected in terms of being able to repatriate the capital and to generate profits in the future."
In Venezuela, "the companies are exposed to the risk that the state could at any time declare them a public utility, and take them over or buy them," he said.
Companies looking to invest in Venezuela also take into account the country risk evaluation, which according to finance ministry data has risen to 648 points -- more than double that attributed to Brazil or Colombia, and the worst level of any South American country except Argentina.

A man defends him home, a coward let’s it be plundered, Bush is a coward. Chavez is just not going to back down to a corporate flunky. Our military is spread too thin as it is. All we could do is send the navy in as a show of force. The only thing Sadam Hussein ever side that I respect was that if Bush wanted this war, to come and have a man-to-man duel and the winner is the victor. Now tens of thousands of innocent dead men, women, soldiers and children have died because we have a weak, cowardess leader who only knows courage while standing behind the military and giving speeches he is not even smart enough to write. This is the saddest time in North American Political history.

What the hell are you talking about? Look at what you wrote! You are incoherent and illogical. So what the hell are you going to type when Obama gets into the White House and the DemocRATS get control of the Congress? What does your rants have to do with the article in question? What does “A man defends him home, a coward let’s it be plundered, Bush is a coward.” When was the last time someone came to your home and had it plundered? You are a decease laden Liberal and far left looney!
