Presenting his case to obama was truely a waste of time. If he could bring some votes there would be a possibility of some sympathy - there is none. Obama hussein is more likely to help his brother Odinga. Google this guy if you want some real insight into the obama loyalties !

It is sad that so many American leftists are so reluctant to criticize people like Chavez, Castro, and Robert Mugabe. They only speak negatively of these despots if you drag it out of them.

Leopoldo López, the opposition Mayor of Chacao, who has been prohibited from standing as a candidate for Mayor of the Capital District due to a series of presumed administrative irregularities during his term as mayor as well as earlier charges relating to when he was a state employee, argued that the ban constituted a “political blockade.”

In an interview with Ernesto Villegas during the program “In Confidence” broadcast by state owned television station, VTV, López, who is challenging the injunction, declared he would not accept it if the Supreme Court ruled against him.“It is impossible,” he said.

One of the administrative irregularities for which López has been sanctioned occurred in 1998 when he, as an employee of Venezuela’s state owned oil company PDVSA and a member of the Primero Justicia Civil Association (ACPJ - a forerunner to the Primero Justicia political party), received a donation of 60 million bolivars from PDVSA in a cheque made out to the ACPJ and signed by his mother (also an employee of PDVSA at the time).

Under a cooperation agreement between PDVSA and the Inter-American Foundation, any donation by the state oil company to employees or functionaries, direct family members of employees, or foundations or entities related totally or partially to any of the said parties is strictly prohibited.

López, who was granted a right to self-defense during the Comptroller General’s investigation, admitted that the ACPJ had received the money but argued it did not constitute a crime.“Yes I worked in PDVSA as a recently graduated analyst, but we had a civil association and we presented a project the same as twenty other associations,” he said.

When questioned as to whether he thought this represented a conflict of interest, the opposition mayor refused to give a clear answer.

While he recognized that the Comptroller General’s Office can implement administrative sanctions for acts of corruption, López argued that the right to be elected could only be withdrawn as a result of a civil or criminal trial.

López, a signatory to the infamous “Carmona Decree” which dissolved all public powers, including the Supreme Court and the National Assembly during the short-lived April 2002 military coup against the Chavez government, is also being investigated for misuse of municipal resources in support of a group of rebel military officers who camped out in Altamira Plaza (in Chacao municipality) for more than a year after the coup, from November 2002, and who were linked to a string of bomb attacks and apparently politically motivated murders in Venezuela during 2003.

Yépez reiterated that the CNE would comply with the legality of the ruling based on article 105 of the Organic Law of the Comptroller General but said that the appropriate place to raise grievances is the Supreme Court.

Those who have been sanctioned “continue to maintain their right to vote, to organize themselves, to protest and to have their opinions,” he added.

I see - the usually ignorant blather about the Chavez government ... I wish some of you folks would actually do your homework. Rigged elections huh? That's not what any of the international election monitors, including the Carter Foundation, reported. In fact, there hasn't been one shred of evidence to imply election tampering in Venezuela under Chavez.

By the way, you might want to think about the fact that if someone from Venezuela posts on a forum, they might not be an objective voice. You know why many Venezuelans (especially in Miami) hate Chavez? Cuz they're rich! If you meet a pissed Venezuelan, remember that there's no way in hell the majority of Venezuelans, who are poor (+65% of the country), could afford a ticket to the States.

The "opposition" represents the rich minority of the country - a country that has one of the highest inequality rates in Latin America. They love to whine about so called civil rights abuses and repression but don't offer any evidence. Now this is a group that was totally fine with systematic repression and assassination of left wing leaders for the last three decades. Anyone want to talk about the Caracazo?

Another think they like to talk about a lot is the lack of free speech - again, if you've actually been there, you'd know that 4 out of the 5 major stations are privately held, participated in the propaganda during the 2002 coup and oil lockout, and continue to present whatever angle they want without reprisal. In fact, you can go and watch it yourself and make up your own mind. The newspapers have enjoyed the same freedom. I know, because I've fucking read them - and you can to if you actually take the time to look!

They don't like to talk about what Chavez has been doing. By the way, and these are World Bank figures, the Chavez government has managed to cut unemployment by half. Don't look at me - blame the World Band for that figure. On top of that, the Venezuelan economy has out paced most countries in the WORLD in terms of economic growth and that is NOT all attributable to the oil sector. On top of this - free education, medicine, job training, etc.

I've filmed the barrios, I've filmed parliament, I've been in the richest parts of Caracas and Isla Margarita, and I've interviewed people from all walks of life. What you're hearing and reading is a total fabrication. But apparently you, just like during the lead up to the Iraq war, are happy digest the usual propaganda without ever questioning any of it.

Did it ever occur to you that our government could lie to you? No way, right? Would Bush lie to you? Would Nixon? Would Clinton? Would Regan? Contras? We don't know about any Contras!!!!

Grow up people - governments manipulate information. If any of you were awake during your high school US history class you'd know that. This is history repeating itself.

Few “big fishes” have gone to jail for corruption, in a country where it has long been almost endemic. Corruption is almost a way of life for some people in Venezuela, where the oil wealth has also had negative influences over decades. Chavez really has to fight a cultural battle to show people that being what they call “un vivo” in Venezuela -- a person who knows how to get over on the system -- isn’t really something that should be admired. But it’s a fair criticism that the government has not done enough to fight corruption, including within its own ranks.
There are some studies indicating that poverty during Chavez’s presidency has dropped from 44 percent to 30 percent. These figures do not include the benefits poor people are deriving from various social “missions” Chavez has instituted targeting health and education, but rather count only cash income. The numbers originate from the government but are accepted by many international organizations. It also stands to reason that poverty has dropped, since the country has been flooded with dollars from the boom in oil prices. Chavez has redirected much of that money to the majority poor and this never happens with the 4th "Republica.

López is being investigated for misuse of municipal resources in support of a group of rebel military officers who camped out in Altamira Plaza (in Chacao municipality) for more than a year after the coup, from November 2002, and who were linked to a string of bomb attacks and apparently politically motivated murders in Venezuela during 2003.”

Lopez has been a spokeperson for the ultra-right groups that have opposed Chávez consistently, stridently and at times violently. He was a supporter of the 2002 coup that overthrew Chavez and for a period of hours claimed to control Venezuela. He signed the Carmona Document during this coup, which dissolved the Supreme Court and National Assembly. Diehl repeatedly tries to build a case that he is a populist and a democrat, and of course does not ponder such contradictions as his participation in a violent overthrow of the Venezuelan government. Lopez recently stated,``What's important is that the United States advances an agenda that makes a priority of democracy and human rights, as well as poverty alleviation and addressing inequality. Chávez has no answer to that.''(from http://www.citymayors.com , as quoted by Andrew Stevens, Deputy Editor, in an article “Kidnapped and shot at, a Venezuelan mayor opposes country’s president”.)

Diehl presents Lopez as a victim of human rights abuses because he has been prohibited for running for office for three years as an administrative measure. He does not mention that 180 of the 371 others who have had the same sanctions applied are supporters of Chávez.

It's nice to see there may actually be a light at the end of the tunnel with Chavez. Venezuelans have stood up at just the right time to shut this guy down. His successor(s) better do things right or he'll be back and more powerful next time.

I'm not a Chavista but I agree with you in many things the government has done but most of them have taken " another way ". I still think nobody cares to improve for instance tourism and we have to create a big substructure and don't live just from oil. When they made " Barrio Adentro " I agree very much.A lot of friends of mine were mad at me but I always think we have to feel and to be in the case of someone else to understand a few things in life. Now , It's not working than before. If I was a mother without money and I live in " A rancho" with 5 kids and at 2 am one of them is running with high fever I will be happy to have someone who gave a Tylenol in US, Atamel or Tachipirin in Venezuela , free for my son. We're talking " el cerro " where this mother needs to take two jeeps to get home.I have to put on her shoes not in mine to understand poverty .Corruption is everywhere but I still think not the 4th or 5 th Republican dear dvd_ abad have solved this problem. It has increased.I can't help my friends if my mom doesn't have any thing to eat.First I feed my Mom,second my neighbour. It's easy to criticism when many people from the government and opposition have confort in " The Empire ". They should live here share and help Venezuela and leave their confort around the world !!!! Why do they live outside if they love this government or not and hate americans or chavistas?????It's a good question.Live here and don't tell the ones who stay here we're doing wrong. You are not " ciudadanos de a pie "
