How true! They are just so much a human parasite. They should all go back to their lands and work instead of wasting time in town. The chiefs should do something about this unemployeds in Vila. They could build a bad reputation and image of that pacific peaceful nation, vanuatu - Which they have.

My partner & I were planning to move to Vanuatu, but with the Rape, & the more recent Rape & Murder, I am sadly thinking we shouldn't. I don't want to have to hire security guards to feel safe in my own home.

Although it would be a shame to lose a tax haven, the only way I think the govt. can help the unemployed is by introducing an income tax on wages. Then those who work can help those that don't. Wages are too low as well.

If wages are too low, do you think taxing on it would be good? Honestly...

As far as I am concern this rapist could have been employed, or did the article said he was unemployed.

People just don't understand the core root of the problem in Vanuatu is corruption, there are nearly a dozen of nations injecting money in Vanuatu, only to be stolen by politicians.

Unfortunately it is a vicious circle, scaring people like yourself that want or wanted to invest in Vanuatu does not help...

One person and one crime does not represent an entire social group such as the people from Tanna. Most of them are good people but in every society there are people who do terrible things. What is happened is wrong but to tanish everyone else is also wrong we must use common sense.

The roads are bad, government corrupt, police hopeless, these guys hardly have their showerand are lazy,2 hour lunches ...zeepers even Bill Gates has only one hour of lunch, alot of unemployment and uneducated people around, black magic and all this voodoo crap....
Their prisons are a big joke with holes in fences big enough to fit elephants, the prisoners are often allowed home for weekends, Port Vila is very dirty!!!! Increase in serious criminal offences like violent break ins and rapes...easily the most corrupt ridden country in the Pacific ...also highly ranking in the world....the list goes on and on....

theres nothing good about this place...sadly....investors should think twice and tourists too ...or anyone who is thinking to come and settle here

American, thanks for Vanuatu bashing.... what a joke! Your views are very small minded or narrow minded if you like. What you aforementioned was very generalising and sadly most of what you mentioned are not true. Crime occurs in every community.......... and Port Vila is not that dirty as you mentioned. Port Vila is becoming very popular with tourists.......... at least it is a democracy country in comparison to Fiji which is duly run by a dictator!

hey American, too bad that Vanuatu activates your psychological need for cultural superiority. Its laid back style is what makes it special - the failure to buy into strict punitive control of prisoners must be confronting for someone from a country where killing people is sanctioned by the state and the society. Your obvious inability to deal with the fact that people outside Americahhh may have different religions, beliefs, worldviews etc etc (and have a right to those) is why the ignorant and intolerant American archetype is so lurved internationally. You are clearly a proud example of that.
Don't know what happened to you in Vanuatu (?) but gosh, you should get some help.

I am from UK and I stayed in Vanuatu last year. I was sexually assaulted on a beach there, a tanna man dragged me into the jungle, stuck his fingers in mem, strangled me and told me he would kill me. I beleive the poverty is a HUGE reason for this. He shou;dn've been out working rather than prowling around, another huge problem is the fact that porn is illigal there but pirate dvds are massive. Their source of entertainment comes from Hollywood, full of sex and violence.. they are repressed society looking for a let out. I don't think it is cultural superiority, vanuatu is a primitve place still, it is still a develping country. I think a huge problem in fact is that Westerners are there, it has caused a huge influx of a strange new world to tribesmen and created a confusion. I hav had first hand experience of the effects of someone's repression and it wasnt pleasant. I won't be going back there just yet, I tihnk the people need to develop their own sense of culture there more rather than create holiday homes for westerners!

Compare Fiji and Vanuatu, fiji is worst. There is military junta in place, killing people and every Fiji Times paper is full over robbery, stealing, rapist...this is every day story in fiji newspaper. I've lived and studied in fiji for 4 years and robbery can happen anytime to you in daylight night time..moreover the cons are targetting students. Vanuatu incidence is minor compare to fiji...full of con people, robbers, dictators..the so call the way the world should be..moce viti

Just that one incident, and you call us pigs, what about innocent people who got murdered in your cities every day, weeks, months, years. Some people get away with it would you call them pigs too. At least she's not dead, i think you should open your eye and see the reality around before pointing your crazy finger to others and calling them pigs.

If you look at Port Vila, most of the crimes are done by people from Tanna. I'm not against people from Tanna, but why are they such assholes compare to the rest of the nation? Tanna get as much money as Santo does. Santo has 4 times the land and population than Tanna, yet Stupid Man Tanna cannot look for a job and faetem kok blong elgeta olbaot. ol kranke bigfala hol blo sit nomo oli stap makem trabol.

Wake Up! Tax Haven, you have to be kidding. What do you think it is going to cost you to live there? Having know ex pats who have been in the country for that reason who are now getting out have made no positive's for their future or their childrens.
