The bit about the 20m rise is interesting.

The usual HORIZONTAL compression max for a classical island arc such as the New Hebrides sector is 18m so a vertical uplift of that magnitude up the megathrust ramp would be very unusual.

The area is however locked & loaded as a result of the hangup between Papua & the Caroline plateau, so this may be an example of the overcompression typical of active island arcs just before a cordillera r/lx event lets go aft creating a bloody great big tsunami & cascades along the adjoining arcs.

Be interesting to find out whether the 20m rise is ash deposit or tectonic uplift.

Currently Andesite.

Was previously Basaltic Andesite at the point when the E.flank let go and unroofed the high level magma chamber in a massive avalanche which produced impressive basaltic andesite ignimbrites.

Volcano currently hosts a large basaltic andesite magma chamber with andesite distilled up over the roof region which pops out through the roof fracture vents. The magma chamber fills another large pre avalanche fracture with the magma chamber growing as the E.slope slowly slides downslope.
