Argentinians are fooled again, once more as in all their history . Their "brothers" form uruguay are going to receive the major investment in their history with thousands of job opportunities and industries related to pulp buisness. This kind of PULP factories (ECF, elemental chloro free) are widespread all around the world, with so little pollution that are totally insignificant, comparing to others. Argentina is not precisely a country that cares about ecology. In fact, its territory its lot much polluted than uruguayan, a country well positioned in the ranking of environmental caring countries...This claiming has nothing of ecology fundamentalism but of politic and economic interests. Unfortunately, people from Gualeguaychu (a city distant about 30 Kilometers from the plant, across the river) had been manipulated by them. This interests are: argentinians pulp mills, risk of great investments on the other coast of the river and the big one, the prevalence of the river ports which are rivals for centuries.

It is true that the Argentinean Pulp industry is old fashioned and very polluting, but it is wrong that the Uruguayan mill will have "so little pollution that are totally insignificant".
The pulp mills of today are enormous energy, water and chemical demanding and they contribute significally to pollution of air and water even though the mill will be modern. The ECF technique is defenitely the best option for clean production. Other technical solutions as TCF is a better choice and if chosed by Botnia, would have saved them from a lot of critique. It is doubtful if Botnia will still be the owner of the mill if completed as they would probably be affected by market campaigns later.

Should read:

The rivalry between these countries has been there
for centuries; this proves it, and fanatics help more.
Argentina does not care about pollution, only that they miss the deal!

I live in the Pacific NW (USA) and know that pulp mills are nasty!

However, my real concern is watching, once again, a South American country allowing Europeans (or any other foreign entity) to come in and suck up natural resources. The mill itself is not the entire problem. It is the land on which the Eucalyptus trees will be grown and harvested. This would never have passed an environmental impact study in California!! The big guys are taking advantage of the little guys once again and 8,000 jobs won't undo the damage.

These European bastards are coming in and giving Uruguayans JOBS!!! How dare they, Judy. Who needs jobs, anyway. Maybe you can agitate for unfettered Uruguayan illegal immigration to Spokane instead.

This is clearly a political issue.
You don't have to be "rocket science" to be able to find a lot researchs and rankings where Finland is scoring a top points in areas such as sustainable development and environmental issues.
At the moment there are approximately 20 pulp mills in Finland and still the environment is exceptionally unpolluted, thanks to the Finns long tradition of environmental awareness and protection.

US sucks up the natural resources of South America in more degree, than European countries. And US is the one of the bigger maker of pollution in the world.

Mta you are a jackass. The Black Forest is dying because of German pollution. Third World farmers everywhere are punished by European crop subsidies. And, how much greenhouse gas did burning 6 million Jews in your crematoriums release into the air?

Jerry's right. While it's true that timber products giants have a less than stellar history, Weyerhaeuser in particular is creating not only jobs, but also an excellent reputation for ecological concern in Uruguay.

Neighbours musn't fight.Because one day I need you and the next day you will need my help. Argentina and Urugauy must find a way to work together. That is unless Uruguay can find a way of only using Uruguayan water and not interfering with the air that Argentinians breathe.Politics must not be used because this is about ecology.I find it interesting to note that some people have used the excuse that because other countries have built these and there has been no disaster that it's ok to do it there. The problem is no one wants to have something stuffed down their throats.Let us all consider each other as friends.

Jerry Bourbon, you are obviously an agitator and nothing you say is relevant. Everyone else should recognize you as the kind of person who looks at internet forums and irrationally disagrees with people for his own amusement. Also, I have a hard time believieng that any powerful nation, European or American, has any concern for South American jobs or economies. They (we) have never helped anybody. Don't believe these unresearched claims.
