This is probably the way they were supposed to act before, but they knew damned well that this is considered rude, especially by Europeans. They normally have visa waiver agreements with the US. I heard they are retooling that agreement recently.

A lot of these vistors violates the visa status and they do not go back after the visit. I do not blame US consulate for tough questioning.

Could it be the Millions and Millions that lied their way into the US that has made the scrutiny necessary.

Lucia Baldomir is a reporter for the El Pais newspaper in Montevideo, Uruguay. She is working for the Sun-Sentinel courtesy of the Alfred Friendly Fellowship program for visiting journalists.

Hmmm, seems she has a problem with her host country.

These venerable commentators should try to imagine Native Americans discussing European migrants landing on the Atlantic coast a few hundred years ago: "poor huddled masses...". And then imagine what their ancestors did to the Native Americans. If we are going to discuss migrants, let's make an effort to drop our hypocrisy and consider migration over time.

The situation described here is just yet another example of the havoc being caused by a federal government that refused to consistently enforce our immgration laws for over 20 years.

...yes, history, my friend. You should try it. Among other things, it is full of examples of incestuous and self-involved societies dying out, and how societies that survived were open in nature, always willing to learn from others. You should also try the natural sciences and evolution -- unless you have already cast your lot with "intelligent design", in which case we should all shut up and pray for you. Nature abhors purity, and prefers hybridization. Those who survive are typically the ones willing to adapt and look beyond their little wells... just like the millions who migrated to the Americas over the years. But of course, that is history and evolution... why should somebody else have the chance that your ancestors did, right? It requires some order of insecurity and paranoia to call them invaders, but hey, this is a free country, and you have the right to express your opinion. They have a right migrate!

As an immigrant to America originally from Argentina I am ashamed of the way people are getting into this country and think they have a right to do it.

They have a right migrate!

You are right they do have a right to migrate when America says so.

And while were at it we really don't need 4 million H1B visas here as well. We are in a recession.

How dare that Embassy worker do their job correctly. Who would ever think any one that wants to enter America and then stay after their Visa expires would use Disney World as a ruse. All I can say is that Embassy worker should get a raise and a promotion for looking out for the well being of us LEGAL CITIZENS. And for the woman that wrote this story....all I can say is you sure fit in at the Sun Sentinel

Another moron chimes in about 'Native Americans" First of all...this was not a nation...it was a territory. The "natives" also migrated here. The few countries that did exist at the time were interested in expanding their empires. We are now a nation of laws....including IMMIGRATION LAWS....I know that pains an open borders asswipe like yourself but it is true. It is time for you to drop your hypocrisy. And give us your tired, your hungry, your poor is a freaking poem....not an ammendment to the constitution!

Thanks for backing my point by mentioning the so-called Native Americans also migrated here. If you go back further, Homo sapiens migrated out of Africa.

Do you actually know how many countries existed at "that" time? Would appreciate a count and a reference.

I do believe in obeying laws as much as writing better laws to get rid of bad ones. And let's not forget: the Nazis and the Soviets had laws, too.

As for what constitutes a Nation, a Country and a Territory, a lot depends on the references used. Webster's dictionary has this as the first entry for the word Nation: "a stable, historically developed community of people with a territory, economic life, distinctive culture, and language in common." By this definition, communities living here when Europeans "discovered" Americas would indeed be called nations. Will you now use your colorful adjectives for the people who write Webster's?

Thanks for the information that the plaque at the Statue of Liberty has a poem, not an amendment to the Constitution.

Your language reflects frustration and insecurity. I wish you can get over it. Have a good day.
