June 12, 1939 A post office in Jerusalem was bombed, killing a British bomb expert trying to defuse the bombs.

These tactics were described by Josephus as beginning in the CE 50s:

… a different type of bandits sprang up in Jersualem, the so-called sicarii, who murdered men in broad daylight in the heart of the city. Especially during the festivals they would mingle with the crowd, carrying short daggers concealed under their clothing, with which they stabbed their enemies. Then when they fell, the murderers would join in the cries of indignation and, through this plausible behavior, avoided discovery.(Quoted in Richard A. Horsley, "The Sicarii: Ancient Jewish "Terrorists," The Journal of Religion, October 1979.)

The Sicarii operated primarily in the urban environment of Jerusalem, including within the Temple. However, they also committed attacks in villages, which they also raided for plunder and set on fire in order to create fear among Jews who acquiesced or collaborated with Roman rule. They also kidnapped notables or others as leverage for the release of their own members held prisoner.

The above illustrates the problem of terrorism summed up by the expression “one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter”.

I think we need to be aware of the downsides of nationalism and religion. Nationalism was largely inculcated in western populations during the Napoleonic wars. Ever since then, but often before then, it has been a means of motivating people to hate and kill the wicked ‘them’. Even now, people still see patriotism as an inherently good thing. It is not. It is like money in that it can be used for good or evil. Or maybe more like good intentions like those on the US political right who see salvation in either the spread of what they would term democratic government, or even in the rather absurd notion that Christianity can save mankind.

Meetings across cultures and nations have failed to agree on a clear definition of ‘terrorism’. We feel we know it when we see it. It appears to me that Mr Mandela, Mr Begin and Mr Bush have killed many people out of what they saw as a righteous cause or with good intentions.

We need to recognise what it is that divides those who do not accept the terrorist’s way from those of the terrorist. We need to understand why we are nationalistic or patriotic and the danger such concepts pose, as opposed to simply taking a pride in one’s homeland by working hard and practicing tolerance and moderation as well as strength of purpose.

We need to recognise religious beliefs for what they are - superstition. No god would favour people according to their religion any more than the colour of their skin. If he/she does, why worship it? Why does it want to be worshipped?

We should not judge someone at all by their religious beliefs or religion. Ideology, religion and nationalism are the three main causes of human conflict. Try organising it without them! Without them, there are only the violent and the non-violent. There is nowhere in united world for the terrorist to hide.

I agree with what you are saying but a paradox is razed.
How can we except (not judge) Ideologies or religions that have a negative effect on society? Ideologies that divide and misdirect society.

If nationalists or those that believe in space aliens could go about there existence not effecting others in a negative way things would work your way.

There are some that no amount of reason or logic will sway, What do we do with these inferior thinkers?

The only option is to weed inferior thinkers out with a strong ethical and moral charter.

We must stop the inferior thinkers from holding positions of power and imposing ideologies of division.

Firstly, there is no “my way” or “your way”.(Consider basic rules of debate). I suggest that the concepts of ideology, nationalism, patriotism and religion can be used for good or evil. We need to understand when and why they help and why they can be evil.

I see no paradox. One does not except ideologies or religions but need to understand the dangers inherent in the concepts of ideology, religion nationalism and patriotism. Like everything in life it is a question of degree. If I say I am Jewish (for example) and wish to follow the Torah as if it was the word of god, that is not an issue. The issue begins when my faith interferes with the rights of others. If I say I have a right to be in Jerusalem because I am Jewish, I go too far. The same as being Muslim gives me no right in and of itself to live in Mecca. Jews may have a right to live in Jerusalem because they were born there because that is reasonable. It is when religion and nationalism cause us to see people as divided from us that there is the potential for conflict and evil.

One cannot hold the son responsible for the sins of the father.(One can but it never helps). Consider two boys trying to kill each other in Palestine-Israel. One is brought up a good Palestinian Muslim, the other a good Yiddisher Israeli. If they were swapped at birth, they would fight just the same. Only the side each was on would change. How silly is that? Do we not wish to concentrate on our real problems like poverty and economic stability?

The conflict in the Middle East is fuelled to a large extent by the issue of Israel and its security and firm establishment versus its right to exist. There is no reason why Jews, Christians, Muslims and everyone else cannot share Jerusalem (and Mecca). The problem is that the politics of the region are based on religious and nationalist traditions. Devalue those specific traditions and there are just people there. They can remain Jewish and Muslim if they wish, but must consider that it may never be possible to be of different religions or nations and live in peace. One nation or religion cannot own a city or area of land to the exclusion of others without considerable potential for conflict. There are too many lines on the maps.

You know what I love? The fact that you label these as the "first terrorist attacks". You forgot to mention this was during the "great uprising" when the arabs revolted against the british and Jews. Nice try trying to distort the facts though. The Jews and the british joined forces to suppress the revolt. Nice try.

The first Arab riots of the Mandate period took place in Jerusalem in the intermediary days of Passover, in March 1920 ("Bloody Passover"). They were instigated by Arabs acting on unfounded rumors of Jewish actions against Arabs. The British military authorities did not intervene in the Arab attacks, while Vladimir Jabotinsky and other Jews were arrested for organizing a self-defense league. In April 1920, Joseph Trumpeldor and others were killed in the defense of Tel Hai, a settlement in the Upper Galilee. These developments led to the founding of the Haganah on June 15, 1920.

Haj Amin al-Husseini emerged as one of the leaders of the 1920 Arab riots in Palestine and incited the masses to murder Jews and loot their homes. While only in his late twenties, he became the youngest ever Mufti of Jerusalem in 1921, supported by the British.

May 1921 brought new violence in Jaffa followed by large-scale attacks on Rehovot, Petah Tikva, and other Jewish areas. The death toll among the Jews was 47 with 140 wounded. Yosef Hayyim Brenner, the distinguished socialist pioneer and author, was among those murdered. Arab casualties of 48 killed and 73 wounded were almost entirely due to British military action. The main lesson was the power of the Arab masses and the relative ineffectiveness of the Jewish defense.

Sir Herbert Samuel, The High Commissioner, yielded to the demonstration of power: he ordered a temporary halt to Jewish immigration and began negotiations with the Arab Executive Committee. The outcome of these negotiations was the June 1922 White Paper issued by Colonial Secretary Winston Churchill.

The riots were investigated by the Haycraft Commission, who said in their summary report:

* The racial strife was begun by the Arabs, and rapidly developed into a conflict of great violence between Arabs and Jews, in which the Arab majority, who were generally the aggressors, inflicted most of the casualties.

But then the Commission rationalized the cause of the attack, in a pattern that is still seen in the 21st Century:

* The fundamental cause of the riots was a feeling among the Arabs of discontent with, and hostility to, the Jews, due to political and economic causes, and connected with Jewish immigration, and with their conception of Zionist policy as derived from Jewish exponents.

This pattern repeated itself over the decades: Arab riots with Jewish casualties, British official inquiry, followed by appeasement of the Arabs.

From 1922 through 1928 the relationship between Jews and Arabs in Palestine was relatively peaceful. However, in late 1928 a new phase of violence began with minor disputes between Jews and Arabs about the right of Jews to pray at the Western Wall (Kotel) in Jerusalem. These arguments led to an outbreak of Arab violence in August 1929 when Haj Amin al-Husseini, Mufti of Jerusalem, fomented Arab hatred by accusing the Jews of endangering the mosques and other sites holy to Islam. Observers heard Husseini issue the call: Itback al-Yahud "Slaughter the Jews!"

On August 22, 1929 the leaders of the Yishuv met with the British Deputy High Commissioner to alert him of their fears of a large Arab riot. The British officials assured them that the government was in control of the situation. The following day the Riots of 1929 erupted throughout the Palestine Mandate, lasting for seven days.

On Friday, August 23, Arab mobs attacked Jews in Jerusalem, Motza, Hebron, Safed, Jaffa, and other parts of the country. The Old City of Jerusalem was hit particularly hard. By the next day, the Haganah was able to mount a defense and further attacks in Jerusalem were repulsed. But, the violence in Jerusalem generated rumors throughout the country, many carrying fabricated accounts of Jewish attempts to defile Muslim holy places, all to inflame the Arab residents. Villages were plundered and destroyed by Arab mobs. While attacks on Jews in Tel Aviv and Haifa were thwarted by Jewish defenses, there were Jewish deaths in Hebron, where 67 Jewish men and women were slaughtered and Safed, where 18 Jews were killed, as well as scattered other losses totaling 133 Jewish deaths, with more than 300 wounded.

The Arab violence in Hebron was one of the worst atrocities in the modern history of Israel. On the afternoon of Friday, August 23, 1929 Jerusalem Arabs came to Hebron with false reports of Jews murdering Arabs during the rioting there, even saying thousands of Arabs had been killed. Despite the fact that Jews and Arabs in Hebron had been on good terms, a mass of frenzied Arab rioters formed and proceeded to the Hebron Yeshiva where a lone student was murdered. The next day, the Jewish Sabbath, the killing continued as an Arab mob of hundreds surrounded homes where Jews sought refuge, broke in and murdered scores of Jews in a bloody rampage.

The dead Jews that day included Eliezer Dan Slonim, a man highly esteemed by the Arabs. He was the director of the local English-Palestine bank whose many clients were Arabs, and was the sole Jewish member of the Hebron Municipal Council. He had many friends among the Arab elders, who had promised to protect him. Twenty-two people died in Slonim's house that day including his wife and two young children.

In April 1936, riots broke out in Jaffa commencing a three-year period of violence and civil strife in Palestine that is known as the Arab Revolt. The Arab Higher Committee, headed by the Mufti Haj Amin al-Husseini, led the campaign of terrorism against Jewish and British targets.

The Arabs began by proclaiming an Arab general strike and boycott of Jewish enterprises and products. They made demands on the British Mandate administration, principally:

* An end to Jewish immigration
* An end to transfers of land to Jewish owners
* A new "general representative government"

The strike quickly led to a campaign of terror against Jewish people and lands. Seventeen Jews were killed the first day, with little action by the British to stop the rioters. Sparked by the Mufti's agitators, armed bands of Arab terrorists attacked Jewish villages and vehicles, as well as British Army and police forces. By August 1936, responding more to attacks on British assets than to the Jewish losses, the British began a military crack-down on the Arab terrorists.

The Arab strike ended in October 1936 and a temporary peace between Arabs and Jews prevailed for almost a year. Then, in September 1937, following the July report by the Peel Commission, the violent tactics resumed. Armed Arab terrorism, under the direction of the Higher Committee, was used to attack the Jews and to suppress Arab opponents. This campaign of violence continued through 1938 and then tapered off, ending in early 1939. The toll was terrible: Eighty Jews were murdered by terrorist acts during the labor strike, and a total of 415 Jewish deaths were recorded during the whole 1936-1939 Arab Revolt period.

What was the result? The British military suppressed the Arab terrorists, but the British government in effect rewarded them with the publication of the 1939 White Paper, a pro-Arab policy statement that effectively ended the British committment to the purpose of the Palestine Mandate.

Lets look at secularism, its ideology is that government should exist separately from religion or religious belief.

In a pure seculare state the government is not bound by any moral belief. Seculare governments in there purest form follow the ideologies of the Marquis de Sade.
