Instead of concentrating on what was, try to focus on what is and move on. Your being stuck in the past won't help anyone. There isn't a whole lot that can be done for the victims or the offenders, but do we need to continue bashing the other 96%? Do you like witch hunts? Funny you should mention "witch hunts", given the RC's history in THAT arena.

The only reason the catholic church cares now about the pedophiles is money. People got tired of giving their money in the collection basket at church to have it go to pay for the victims lawsuits. So they stopped giving, then the church started apologizing. I honestly don't think they care about the victims (if they did then they would have done something about it right away instead of covering it up) they care about their wallets.

Father Michael Jude Fay wrote: Pope JP II should have removed him pronto. Instead he waited for a near coup in Boston and then gave Law a sweet gig in Rome. Pope JPII does deserve some of the blame but by 2002, he was to ill to know what day it was. Pope Benedict actually went after some people JPII protected or looked the other way on. You have it backward. It was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (who today uses the name of Pope Benedict XVI) who protected those within the Catholic Church. Ratzinger "vetoed" any and all attempts by Pope John Paul II to remove them from the Church (including excommunication). It was Ratzinger who had the position that God, and only God, could/should step in. That man, or Church, should continue to do nothing. And if God didn't step in to protect the children, then the sexual molestation being done by Priests must be OK. While in some twisted way it might be commendable for Ratzinger to have such great faith in his God, but using that as an excuse for the Catholic Church to take no meaningful action is totally unforgivable. Unforgivable by man, by the Church, or by God.

You people still don't get it. Allegations are nothing but unproven accusations. Even in the corporate environment if someone complains about unwanted advances from a superior, they are usually separated because if you fire someone over a false accusation, it's payola time. I personally believe that some priests were guilty of molesting minors but if I had to bet the farm on it, I'd have to pass on that bet because I wasn't there to see what did or did not happen. And again, if you are calling for someone to be punished over an accusation, then let me hear what you have to say about Bill Clinton. Here in America, you are innocent until proven guilty. If criminal charges were brought in a reasonable timeframe, a trial would have taken place and a jury would have decided what none of us have the ability or the evidence to decide.

Enough of the allegations against the Priests who molested minors, and enough of the allegations against the Church for covering up, HAVE BEEEN PROVEN. It is all true. The Catholic Church is certainly NOT a victim of false allegations here.

Jesus is Crying wrote: <quoted text> Witch Hunt??? The Catholic Church ALLOWED children to be sexually abused and turned their focus to protecting pedophiles and instead of doing Jesus's work and PROTECTING the children, they called them LIARS. Cardinal Law is still hiding out in the Vatican and the Pope SAYS he's ASHAMED???? More two-faced nonsense from an organization that specializes in it. You want people to belive this Pope when he says he's "ashamed" tell him to turn Cardinal Law over to the authorities. Then and only then, can he be believed. But until that happens the church is nothing but a bunch of hypocrites. Sit there on your high horse and keep spouting that 4% BS. I'd like to see where you get that figure anyway. I'm sure it's bogus. First of all I have to wonder why so many people from PA read this paper. That being said about 200% more cops are sex offenders, in every way, than priests. Boy scout leaders are no saints either. But isn't it amazing how the priesthood is deionized but the sun seems to shine out the behinds of BSA and the police? Now why is that? Checkout badcopnews.com one day. Then tell me who is harboring more criminals. I am not defending the priests I am just wondering why all the spin? Why is it when a kid goes to Catechism there is an amber alert but cops are all made out to be heroes. Neither group is perfect but the one committing WAY more crime all around is almost deified. Here is a media studies thesis.

STOP COMPLAINING AND START ACTING. DO WHAT I DID AND QUIT. WHEN THE LAST BLIND FOLLOWER PUTS THE LAST DOLLAR IN THE BASKET THEY WILL GO OUT OF BUSINESS AND LEAVE.
STARVING THEM FINACIALLY IS THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THE ROT.
THE MOST CAREFULLY CRAFTED CULT OF ALL TIME. THEY THINK THEY'RE GOD, THEY WANT YOU TO THINK YOU'RE UNWORTHY OF A HAPPY HEALTHY LIFE THAT THIS BUNCH OF DEGENERATES KNOW NOTHING ABOUT.
JUST WALK OUT. IF EVERYBODY DOES IT THEY WILL GO AWAY.

Every preist at every rank on up to the pope knew of the sex abuse before it was exposed. They knew or avoided to know about this SIN. They are as guilty as the perverts that commited these crimes. Now they want to close down and combine the parishes to make money (our money) to pay off the suiets they caused. We built our churches and rebuilt them over all these years and now the people that knew all about these sins want to take our shrines. To **** with all the bishops and everyone that had anything to do with this decision. Here is the real question, has any of this sh** cut into the net worth of one bishop? Show me!

The problem as I see it is that the church just kept moving these pedophile priests around to new hunting grounds. Why didn't they put them into seclusion while they investigated? Why did they cover up as much as they did? If they came clean in the beginning then they would have much more respect now. Also, if they allowed priests to marry, then that would solve most of their problems. I mean, how many men want to, or can, stay celibate for their whole lives? I also think that some men go into the priesthood because they know there is something wrong with them, and are trying to hide it. If you let them marry, then the church would have many more men able to become priests and can be more selective about who they allow to become priests.

And Dr Lowenstein, who will be at East Grinstead, UK is just as bad. He defends them, and is responsible for thousands of suicides in the UK.

Your insistence (which is understandable, granted) that equal attention be paid to the other areas in which this happens doesn't really adress what happened in the church, and why people are skeptical about the institution that, for so long, looked the other way (at the very least). But the Church didn't "look the other way": that's why (unlike, say, the Southren Baptist Convention or the public schools) it has decades-old records for lawyers to sift through. And how anyone could claim to be all upset about the seduction of youth into sexual sins, and not condemn it whenever it happens, is beyond me.

Your post is a good example of how the media covers up sexual abuse when it occurs outside the Catholic Church. Here in the Morning Call circulation area the only priest to be convicted was an EPISCOPALIAN who was defrocked in the 1970s (but kept on the Episcopalian payroll as A YOUTH MINISTER) and finally sentenced in 1994 to 35 years, for all the boys he molested--again, as a youth minister. He was married, with children of his own, so his story didn't fit the agenda and was buried in the local news with headlines like "35 Years Upheld For Sex Assaults".

In 2004 the US Departmetn of Education estimated that the problem is "at least 100 times worse" in the public schools (Charol Shakshaft, Hofstra University). And the government forces you to send your children to the public schools; do you feel we should stop paying property taxes, as well?
