to argue that Sharia law could govern by agreement because private parties can agree not to use English law to govern a contract is an inane leap.

parties to a contract can typically select what state's (or country's) laws will govern their legal relationship, but this is not to say that a purely religious set of rules can be selected to govern behavior.

What about those who believe polygamy is their religious entitlement? What about those who believe ingestion of peyote is their religious entitlement? What about those who may believe in stoning adulterers as their religious entitlement?

the whole concept of "selection of laws" presupposes the selection of secular laws that govern EVERYONE within the state (or country).

this ruling is logically flawed, and utterly preposterous.

I have read several editions of it, including the ones that leading clerics would rather were not mentioned, and anyone who follows that vile tripe is a gullible fool, if Islam isnt full of hate then why todays headlines from Iraq?
At this rate there wont be any need to surrender to Islam, they will have all eliminated each other! what a good day that will be.

Never thought about them eliminating each other. Which will probably happen. Since they all claim to be right.

Others, including a top judge in the UK, agrees with the Archbishop of Canterbury. His remarks are not always seen in context though. It is important to understand that he acknowledged the supremacy of UK law. We also need the same rights for Muslims as for Jews, or any other religion. The problem, IMO, is religion itself.

Religion (ie superstition) is the problem. End these superstitions and such problems go away. We need to concentrate on human and environmental problems, not the ones we invent for ourselves. Jobs not gods.

My understanding is that not only would they not be threatened by the UK state, they would have the protection of its UK law. The problem comes from Muslim religious extremists who regard even Sir Salman Rushdie as someone who should be killed, simply for what he wrote. Some extremists think that anyone who leaves Islam should be killed. One needs to keep in mind how small a minority they are amongst 1.6 million British Muslims, let alone the 60 million people in the UK.

The Muslim problem in Britain is bigger than that, IMO. They involve their religion in politics. They seem to identify with the concept of the caliphate and loyalty to religion more than to the society in which they live. They insist on social traditions and etiquette (thinking here of veils and facilities for prayers) that cause problems for the whole of society. One Muslim said to me "you cannot expect me to agree with everything you say Jim. I am a Muslim." He saw no irony or comedy in that. I think it sums up what happens when a sect are divided from everyone else by too fervent belief in religion.
