1 1) Oil 2) Suppoort democracy in Georgia 3) Enlarge NATO as fast as they can, so it will be esier to stop Russia 4) to give an example to the other post soviet states that the world will not tolerate Russia's idiotic actions. P.S. Russia is becoming more and more dangerous, adn they showed to everyone last week, do not respect their agreements and do not give a shit on human lives. Russian general threaten poland with pombing them with nuclear bobms! It was general and not some private soldier. P.S. I think its time to overlook what we can achiev with Russia with diplomcay and start building real securty for our people. USSR is back |

1 Gentlemen: The above points are very good. However, the biggest point is left out. Russia is, has always been, and unless stopped will always be, A BULLY. I have had personal experience with a terrible bully. Even though I was a stocky little guy ( 5 ft 2 150 lbs) in the 6th grade, I was very peaceful and let this bully whomp on me almost every day. One day I had had enough. When he started to hit me, I lit into him and laid him out cold. When he came to he was never again a bully. Until the free world takes a major action against Russia she will continue to bully. Maybe it is time to start thinking about what action to take. There is no way this bully can stand up to a United Europe, North American Alliance. Face facts people, the only way to stop a bully is to hit back much harder than it does. |

"Eastern democracies" are pretty much on the way to become "Western" themselves. Just look at the Centropa region involving Vienna/Wien - Bratislava/Pozsony - Sopron/Ödenburg - Győr. It's one of the most vigorously developing areas of Europe.
On the other hand, as far as NATO accession is concerned, I remember very well that potential applicants had to sign basic contracts with neighboring countries never to enter any conflict (such agreements were signed between Hungary and Slovakia as well as Hungary and Romania). If the same terms were applied to Georgia, it should not be admitted to NATO as of yet. |

1 I forget which ex- Clinton Administration official, that argued that the price of oil and the movement of the world towards Democracy move in opposite directions. The more we pay these Democratically challenged regimes for oil, the less incentive for them to become democratic. The sooner we are off hydrocarbons the sooner the Russians will become more friendly to us all. The U.S. should not be the policeman for every territorial dispute throughout the planet; we should be limiting the expense of our massive military industrial complex, not look for other excuses for Cheney and his neo-cons sycophants to bankrupt us. Halliburton made enough off Iraq. Time for a change in our gunboat diplomacy. |

1 Soft, tough .. The reason is that the situation in the word changed dramatically, while Bush was sleeping. US weight in the world increased sharp. EU -- much more. Now West consume in four times more than produce. Think over ... To say "Russia got impudent" is too primitive. |

1 Unfortionately Russia had a great chance to change for the better. I do not know what happened to Putin but he changed in my opinion. I am a person for free press because with free press (even if you do not like it) you get different opinions and then you can make your own decision. Russia at present does not have free press. It is state controlled and that is sad and an insult to the minds of the Russian people. They think you have to be told what to think. If you goverment controls the press then they are insulting the people of the country. |

1 We are much the same JohnK... I've never liked Bush... and I thought Putin might be doing the best he could for his people, considering Russia was about to swallowed by Western multi-national corporations. I still don't like Bush... either of them. But I think Putin has gone too far... he's not thinking about his people anymore. He's only thinking about power. |
