20th century??
In the early 20th century, the Ottoman Empire was referred to as the ôsick man of Europa''
Turks were spending their lives fighting for their country..balkans,Caucasus,arab deserts...(Christians and Jews response to army reforms was to pay a special tax exempting them from army duty, rather than fulfilling the mandatory service.)
so Jews and Christians played important role in the domestic and foreign trade of the Empire!
Fair enough. Although so far as I know even agricultural production was largely in the hands of Greeks. Grapes and raisins and figs etc.

Still, what you say above does not prove and support what you claim about the Greeks' "laziness". The Greeks wherever they have lived, in Turkey in the past, in Europe, in US, in Australia etc they have flourished in every sector of economy and the academia. Greece now is another matter. And to tell you the truth, much of what remains from the Ottoman occupation era is to blame for today's situation. As many of you Turks say, it is only less than 200 years that Greece is independent.
