Since tourism is the numero uno industry in PR, I'm glad to hear this news. More tourists, more employment.

"....Tourism produces 7 percent of the island's GNP and employs more than 60,000 islanders, a figure that is rapidly increasing. Hotels provide over 12,000 rooms, operating at full occupancy..." —David L. Childree

60,000 out of 1.2 million workers in P.Rico...is hardly the "número uno" industry.... 12,000 hotel beds (in P.Rico) against almost 100,000 in the Dominican Rep....hardly makes tourism the "número uno" industry.... Only 7% of Puerto Rico's GNP...hardly is the "número uno" industry.... LOL hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha ROTFLMAO hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Tourism is way too volatile and depends on way too many factors to be the "número uno" industry. If "acts of God" get in the way...there goes the "número uno" industry (as it happened in St. Thomas after Marilyn). If tourists do not come, so much for the "número uno" industry. If the US lifts the Cuban embargo, there goes your "número uno" industry. etc. etc. etc. Hotel stays are cheaper in other Caribbean islands because they don't have the costs and federal expenses imposed by the US.

•Because of its economic dependence upon tourism, Hawaii's economy is very susceptible to any fluctuations in the air travel industry and to any changes made in tourist marketing by the Destination Management Organization (DMO). In addition, Hawaii's extensive tourist industry over the past 50 years has greatly altered and impacted the native culture and ethnic diversity of the state's society. The rapid growth of tourism has also led to dramatic industrial and infrastructure development on all of the Hawaiian Islands.

Jorge, what is Puerto Ricos number one industry? Pray, tell us. Jorge, get a grip on your obsession of Puerto Rico being persecuted by the USA. Honestly, there are good mental health professionals all over the island. Find one! Even if you are unemployed, uninsured, & supported by your elderly parents, REFORMA will help you. Is your paranoia ever accompanied by suicidal thoughts? Your long strings of "hahas" is maniacal. Do you foam at the mouth while you're typing?

At least show some respect for our readers who have mental problems. Show some compassion to those who have those kinds of health problems. And, last (but not least) read Topix's terms of service and follow them, be polite and refrain from insults.

In spite of your nastiness, I do have respect for you. I have both respect & compassion for persons suffering from mental illness. As we know, mental illness is rampant in PR. I believe there was a study conducted by local researchers in the early 2000s that showed more than half of the island population had some form of mental illness. You, of all people, should be aware of the situation & research on the subject. I have tremendous respect & compassion for those suffering from mental illness. A combination of mental illness & lack of gun laws were the primary causes of the tragedy in Tucson, AZ two weeks ago today. I think Reagan & his cohorts were wrong to put the mentally ill onto the streets rather than to provide care for them & protect both them & society. Of course, Ronald Reagan also has the blood of thousands on his hands for refusing to speak the word "AIDS" until it was too late to stop the spread of the disease. Puerto Rico suffered more than most other places because of his ignorance, and refusal to call for action. By the way, why haven't you told us what Puerto Rico's #1 industry happens to be?

Puerto Rico's No. 1 industry is Illegal Drugs resulting in the highest murder rate and violent crimes such as 27 murders so far this year and rapidly increasing. More than one murder a day. Puerto Rico's No. 2 industry is all forms of political social and religious corruption. Puerto Rico's No. 3 industry, including by political leaders, is violence towards women, children and animals. However, the No. 1 respected industry is tourism...

Do you like living in such a place, yankee? What is the real reason you live in P.Rico?

Anecdotally speaking, it may be that the #1 reason for 50% diagnosis of mental illness in the island is the incentive of SDI. While there are legitimate diagnosis, it would be interesting to find out how many are drug related and/or false claims based on wanting to get the SDI benefit. It is sad to see these statistics.

The US's voracious appetite for illegal drugs from South America is killing Puerto Rico's young. We have illegal drugs entering thru every coast and arms and guns entering thru every port, mail and airport.... The US has flooded our islands with corruption, illegal drugs and guns. Is this what the US is really doing in P.Rico?

It is a pity that the problem stems from the lack of resolve to vote out of the current status. Statehood would solve it. Resistance is futile. PR will be assimilated.

All of them speak Spanish, are proud of Puerto Rico and of their civil rights...(which trashed the "melting pot" and "assimilation policy" out the window)... You're still stuck in pre Civil Rights USA. Get a grip or join the Oregon militias.
