There was a biologist who did this recently for National Geographic and it was amazing to see how much of that continent is still unexplored and virtually unpenatrable.

I was familiar with the expression but didn't know where it came from. Interesting article.

What impresses me most about both journeys - Livingstone's and Stanley's - is how difficult they'd be for the average person today, let alone back then when there were fewer navigation tools, less-detailed maps, lousy hiking gear, etc.

How did the line become so famous when so few know the real story? Interesting article.

I agree with you, Intrepid Implorer, that the average person today would be ill-equipped to even attempt this journey. I doubt either Livingstone or Stanley was extensively trained in survival skills - and yet they made it work. Amazing stuff.

was stanley's journey worth it, considering that half of his party died and livingstone continued to live in the jungle?

The fact that Stanley was a slave trader was conveniently overlooked.

I also wondered where the line came from. People used to quote it from time to time. I wonder if they knew, too.

Daily Horoscope for December 24

Aquarius

Keep calm and all will be well. You're feeling slightly fraught because there are so many demands on your time, and it won't help if you're trying to juggle some last-minute chores with some fun-filled social events. Get others to lend you a hand, or tell yourself that perfection is not an option right now and that you'll have to scale down your preparations accordingly.
