The international politics behind Obama's Nobel Peace prize

Full story: features.csmonitor.com

The surprise decision to award President Barack Obama the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize had much of the world scratching its head on Friday, even among the president’s most ardent fans. Less than a year into office, the young president has made lofty promises, committed his administration to diplomacy, and convinced the world that a less belligerent America is in the offing.

This prize raises the stature of all Americans after nearly a decade of international scorn. Bravo, Obama!

The international politics behind Obama’s Nobel Peace prize

The Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Barack Obama appears to be an effort to spur on, rather than reward, peacemaking.
By Dan Murphy and Tom Sullivan |
A very poor journalism where Thorbjorn Jagland is abundantly mentioned than about the person who got the prize.
Of course NOBLE prize is not an ideal certificate.

"The controversial awarding of the 1994 prize to Israeli Prime Minister Yitzahk Rabin, Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, and Palestine Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat was less successful. Though the three men eventually signed the Oslo Accords that seemed to have the two nations on a path toward peace, that effort eventually broke down. All three men could be said to have blood on their hands from that conflict, and Mr. Arafat died without achieving his dream of an independent Palestinian state. Mr. Rabin was assassinated in 1995 by an Israeli furious that he was negotiating land concessions."

How a presidents that promotes 2 fierce WARS can receive a Nobel for PEACE ??? The answer is so clear that everybody knows: Pure Politics. America's posture has improved but it is still scorned by half the world as purely retorical.

He should of refused it & told them to shove that million dollars up their noses. That would teach them not to try & buy a politician from the United States.

Obama is the geo-political equivalent of a Miss America Beauty Pageant Contestant.

He won the crown by wishing for world peace.

To be President of America is enough to warrant the Nobel Prize. All of our past presidents deserve the award. And I (drab white guy) am pleased that Obama got the award. For he comes across as being of no specific race, and even he needs to learn as he moves ahead. And all is fine in America, while we work on our economic problems.

Why? Americans have won it in the recent past; AlGore and President Carter, to name a few. If you are blind to the fact that this is a political nomination, pure and simple, then there really is no hope!

Obama is a Chicago politician. It is a given in Illinois that any Chicago politician can be bought. The only discussion is "how much."

You think Bush deserved an award for peace?

I know arafat got one but GWB is responsible for far more suffering than a mere terrorist.

The Nobel Peace Prize is about the politics of peace, so yeah it's definitely political. That's why warhawks like Reagan, Bush I & II, etc would never win and why leaders like Carter, Gore, and Obama do win.

OSLO (Reuters)- Following is the text of the announcement Friday by the Norwegian Nobel Committee giving the Nobel Peace Prize to U.S. President Barack Obama:

"The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

"Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.

"For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."

Thats all fine, but Obama was only Pres for 12 days when he was nomimated.

http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2009/10/09/tom...

"President Obama has broken new ground here. Nominations for potential winners of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize ended on February 1. The president took office only 12 days earlier on January 20.

Let’s take a look at the president’s first 12 days in the White House according to his public schedule to see what he did to deserve a Nobel Peace Prize:

January 20: Sworn in as president. Went to a parade. Partied.

January 21: Asked bureaucrats to re-write guidelines for information requests. Held an “open house” party at the White House.

January 22: Signed Executive Orders: Executive Branch workers to take ethics pledge; re-affirmed Army Field Manual techniques for interrogations; expressed desire to close Gitmo (how’s that working out?)

January 23: Ordered the release of federal funding to pay for abortions in foreign countries. Lunch with Joe Biden; met with Tim Geithner.

January 24: Budget meeting with economic team.

January 25: Skipped church.

January 26: Gave speech about jobs and energy. Met with Hillary Clinton. Attended Geithner's swearing in ceremony.

January 27: Met with Republicans. Spoke at a clock tower in Ohio.

January 28: Economic meetings in the morning, met with Defense secretary in the afternoon.

January 29: Signed Ledbetter Bill overturning Supreme Court decision on lawsuits over wages. Party in the State Room. Met with Biden.

January 30: Met economic advisers. Gave speech on Middle Class Working Families Task Force. Met with senior enlisted military officials.

January 31: Took the day off.

February 1: Skipped church. Threw a Super Bowl party.

So there you have it. The short path to the Nobel Peace Prize: Party, go to meetings, skip church, release federal funding to pay for abortions in foreign countries, party some more.

Good grief.

Let's see, under Reagans watch, the Berlin wall came down and the Cold War ended and the Soviet Union unraveled. Millions of people gained there freedom, but Regan never received the award.

Under Barak Obama, well, nothing has happened and he has won the award. Guess that shows how politically motivated the award really is! Mothere Teresa, Lech Walsea, Martin Luther King and many other deserving winners must be rolling over about now!

Let's be real here. No person who EVER thinks the US is a decent, just place where people live in freedom will EVER win the Nobel Peace Prize.

Only people who hate America need apply.

C'mon! Reagan was a war monger! The credit for the changes to the Soviet Union and the wall coming down goes squarely to Gorbachev, he instituted the reforms that allowed things to change. The clamoring for credit to Reagan is total %&@$!
