They should throw it all back in the ocean and let Spain find it and retrieve it themselves. All these years have gone by and the Spanish government could have retrieved it themselves but they didn't even try.

I think Odessey thought they could pull a fast one. If they thought that the Spanish government would stand by and let them come in and take it w/o working closely with the Spanish authorites, they aren't very smart. They now 'may' end up with nothing or maybe just expenses (if lucky) but I agreee with 'okw' but I doubt the courts would allow them. From what I read over here, the Spanish did not have the technology to go after the treasure even if they knew where it was.

If spain gets the gold and silver back, then how about they give it back to the Aztecs or who ever they stole it from?

" Bitter, party of one?"

Too bad Spain. You shouldn't have waited over two hundred years to go and look for it yourself. You deserve nothing because you did jothing to find and retrieve it.

Cry me a river.

Did you read the article? This was an 18th century shipwreck. There weren't any Aztecs around at that time. Spain owned the land that all that gold came from.

If you want to start talking about how Spain stole that land from the Aztecs, then we need to start talking about all the land that WE stole from the Native Americans. If you're willing to start making reparations to them, then maybe we can demand that Spain hand over that gold to whatever Aztec descendants may still be alive.

International Maritime law says that the treasure belongs to the person who found it, especially after 300 years. The statute of limitations on such lost items is way over.

I was just using Aztecs as an example. If you notice in my post I said "or who ever they stole it from". If you think Spain didn't steal it, then you need to go back and read some history books.

And as far as the Native Americans go, we have given them reparations. We've given them land to build their reservations on. Is it enough for what we did to them - no. But it is what it is. Also, speaking of reparations, how come we don't give any land or money to the Native Hawaiians for stealing their islands? No one ever talks about that.

I agree! If you start talking reparations, they you have to go back to the beginning of time and start figuring out who owes reparations to whom. In reality, we will all owe reparations to everyone else. There is not a land or nation on this earth that has not been invaded, over taken, burnt down, pummeled or plundered at one time or another. So you reparation people need to get real.
