What does it mean to be a Vincentian?

I was born in Kingstown, but I now live in the states. When I first came to this country, when someone (American) heard my accent they would immediately assume I was Jamaican. Why is that? As the years went on when I spoke of my country people would ask if that was in the Caribbean. One lady even had the nerve to ask if it was a different island. Is it ignorance? Or just plain stupidity. I also noticed that a lot of my family members were turning to the Jamaican culture. When I spoke to a friend from back home she asked me if I was Gaza or gully. I am not Jamaican and I sure as hell don't care to be. All I want is for people to know how St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Barbados had Rihanna representing for them. We had Kevin Little but that was in 02' and either way people taught he was Jamaican. I am not hating on them, but is it too much to ask for a little national pride? Let the world know about us, just because we are small don't mean we have to act that way.

Vincy girl I could not agree with you more it is sad. My girlfriend is jamaican and I took her to SVG once and she could have sworn she was still in jamaica. Vincentians were wearing t shirt that said "Jamaica on it, hats etc and they even had the jamaican accent all on the radio stations. Perfect example have you ever heard "jamsey P" speaking? now that's an example there, that man sounds Jamaican. As for people who don't know St Vincent I guess they never looked at a Globe. I'll make my Island proud one day cause I vow to be the very best movie director out of the caribbean. Action!

both of you have greats points. i have a brother who works with a cruise ship and when he calls me, i have to ask him who he was-pure jamaican.

i noticed the same thing in SVG; everyone is wearing jamaican t-shirt and i hate it. the boutiques in kingstown have so many "vincy" t-shirt yet no one buys them

I am American my parents are from St Vincent and I love St Vincent. I plan to retire there. It is beautiful but the people there just try too hard to be someone else, it seems. IO think they just need someone there to give them direction.

Daily Horoscope for June 2

Capricorn

You feel like overindulging yourself in some way today, and why not? Throw caution to the wind and eat your way through a big bar of chocolate, or have a retail therapy session that leaves you reeling from the amount of money you've spent. There's a definite chance you could get carried away and tell a whopper of a story that has little resemblance to what really happened. What on earth has got into you?
