Manny Pacquiao Faces Biggest Challenge of His Career in November Bout Against Miguel Cotto

Full story: www.ballerstatus.com

Baller Status - 10/30/2009: Boxing's #1 pound-for-pound fighter, Manny "PacMan" Pacquiao, is set to get back into the ring on November 14th, when he faces the pride of Puerto Rico Miguel Cotto for what some say will be the toughest bout of his career. Up for grabs in Cotto's WBO welterweight title and the first-ever WBC Diamond Belt. After announcing their fight at an international press conference in Yankee Stadium in New York recently, Pacquiao and Cotto proceeded on the remainder of the five-city coast-to-coast, two-ocean media tour, taking them to Caguas, Puerto Rico, AT&T Park in San Francisco, Beverly Hills, Calif., and PETCO Park in San Diego. "I will train harder than I have ever trained before because Miguel Cotto will be my toughest test as a professional fighter," said Pacman. "I know Miguel Cotto is an excellent fighter and a great world champion. "He is strong and smart and that is a dangerous combination for anyone who challenges him," he continued. "But like every fight, I will not enter the ring alone. My countrymen don't just give me their support, they also give me their strength, their pride and their love. That is why I must give my all. I fight to win and to give honor to the Philippines." Cotto agrees, explaining that Pacman has never met a fighter like him. However, he says the best in the sport will be decided when they finally meet in the ring. "He has fought a lot of tough fighters but never one like me," said Cotto. "The world will know who the best is when we meet in the ring" [Open link for full story.]

I know very little about prize fighting. However, I do know that boxing is an important sport in Puerto Rico. Therefore, I decided to post this story on Topix. Why did boxing become so popular in Puerto Rico? I notice that most Puerto Rican boxers are lighter weight classes. There seem to be no heavy weight boxers. Or am I wrong?

John Ruiz is a Puerto Rican who held one of the many world heavyweight titles in the last 4 or 5 years.

I watched Cotto be beaten to a pulp by Maragrito. Cotto never stopped, never backed down. His uncle/trainer threw in the towel and wouldn't allow the final round to take place. Cotto would have gone out there and gave it everything if he hadn't. I have always wondered who Tio Evangelista was thinking of when he did that.

Many believe Maragrito's gloves were loaded for that fight since Margarito was caught before the start of the Shane Mosley fight wrapping his hands with dry plaster cast wrappings.

Now that Cotto has a new trainer he should have a slightly new look. His boxing skills have improved with every fight he has had as a professional. He has the heaviest punch in his weight class.

But weight is the problem here. Cotto agreed to a maximum of 143 pounds for this fight. He has had weight problems below 147, his perfect weight. Pacman will make the weight without any problem.

I've never seen Pacquiao fight but he is supposed to have a significant speed advantage and a big punch. Cotto has been vulnerable to the uppercut in his past fights and has been cut above the eyes in his last two fights.

If Cotto remembers the Margarito fight and doesn't head hunt so much, works the body with his tremendously heavy left hook, he might just pull this off. If he's beaten too badly, his championship career might be over.

The thing I have never understood about boxing is the promotion. Bob Arum promotes BOTH of these guys. He has been the promoter for almost every big name opponent Cotto has faced. It's like having two of your own roosters fighting each other.

It seems a situation just ripe for exploitation by the promoter. They often pit a fighter on his way up against a fighter on his way down. And a fighter on his way down isn't worth much future money to a promoter.

This should be a GREAT fight.

Daily Horoscope for December 22

Gemini

If you're currently keeping something secret it will really start to prey on your mind today and you'll worry about blurting it out at the wrong moment. It's one of those days in which you're absent-minded and completely wrapped up in your own thoughts. As a result, it will be hard to concentrate on anything else and this won't go down well in certain quarters.
