After 51 years here on the Island, the San Juan Star will close operations on June 30, 2008....The decline of English Instruciton and Usage on the Island is at an all time low....

Puerto Ricans will not learn another language even while living in the Inner Ghettos cities or Orlando....

Sila Calderon, Anibal and the Other Populares have seccessfully and brillantly outlawed the English Language in the Educational Department and the Public Schools....

The Advertisement in the San Juan Star is woefully down to barely paying for operational costs and the subscriptions are down year after year....

Payrolls cannot be met on a timely manner and even WOSO Radio is considering leavign the Island at the end of the year...Puerto Rico is for Puerto Ricans and their language, identity and customs and traditions are all Spanish....

They have clearly refused to learn English and even under Statehood, this Hellhole will be a Spanish Quebec......

Congresss will dispose of the Unincorporated Territory by the year 2012 and let the United Nations send the Freebies, Handouts and the Universal Grab Bags....

We are tired of sending funds to ungrateful and unloyal "foreigners" of this damn hellhole....

This is sad news for me.

I always enjoyed reading the San Juan Star during my time in Puerto Rico, especially the endless barrage of letters to the editor bashing the Navy and the United States. Finally, it got to the point where I couldn't stand it any longer and, in defensive mode, I fired off the following fax to the San Juan Star.
----------

Notes: Yet another day (or a portion thereof) with no electrical service in xxxxxx - this time for seventeen hours.(Aug. 6th, 6:30am - 11:30pm)

Since my arrival in Dec. 98, I would estimate the number of outages to be somewhere around thirty, a number it would take 25 YEARS to reach in the State of New York. However, the Municipality of xxxxxx, has managed to achieve it in a mere 8 months.

I strongly suspect the Navy is to blame for the latest disruption in service, but if not the Navy, then definitely the United States. Either way, rather than whine and complain endlessly to the San Juan Star about them both, maybe I'll just vote for independence in the next referendum.

Americans come here and gthay also fail to learn the language and jump in into our hispanic culture. I disregard disrespectful and moronic commentaries, they just show again why you fail.....to bad.....sorry to see you go

I recall reading a very recent letter to Readers' Viewpoint - The San Juan Star from you. It was an excellent letter. Many of my friends commented about your letter being bright, intelligent and helpful.
On blogs, there are alway one or two obnoxious trolls who use many different pseudo names to hide behind as cowards. They are generally vulgar, hateful, intolerant and above all outrageously stupid and out of touch with reality.
It is difficult to do. However, I try to ignore them.

I live in the Metro San Juan area. I use Sprint wireless. Unlike by Powerlink, it does not identify me as being in Metro San Juan. It usually mentions the area of where the statellite being used for that particular message is located.

Contrary to the pessimism of this boor, English is alive and well in Puerto Rico, at least according to the quality of essays from public school students on their College Board Advanced English Exams. And according to the spoken English of all manner of people in restaurants, bars, and government agencies.
And please, o boor, refrain from confusing the people of a country with their government and political leaders.
If Americans were judged by the grammar of George Bush, let alone the decisions of his administration, we might be forced to perform all sorts of competencies just to enter Canada--"Sir, how many fingers am I holding up?"

I do not know who you're - as usually cowards never use their name. I am a California lawyer born and raised in the island and take great offense of your statement. The island have paid dearly for all the freebies that you talk about in your post. Thousands of Puerto Ricans have died defending the USA since WWI. This hellhole that you speak about is a beautiful island that is proud of their Spanish heritage, while loyal to the nation of their citizenship. Although I would strongly disagree with terminating the teaching of the national language in the island - your insults to people that have historically protected their American citizenship with pride seemed to reflect misunderstanding and perhaps prejudice. I am an American citizen that happens to be Puerto Rican. You're a disgrace to America and everything we stand for.

Listen Troll - I don't believe you. In your ugly anti-Puerto Rican postings, you represent everything that is not American. You do not act or talk like an American. You sound like the German brownshirts krauts of the 1930's in Hitler's Germany.

I bet you know how to goose step and wear KKK hoods. How red is the back of your neck? You don't seem to pratice one single principle of American democracy.

I guess you cannot see how evil you are in almost all your postings. Does your arrogance keep you in denial? Get more humble and more like a decent human being. Shame on you...

By now, as a skillful troll, you must have at least hundred pseudo names to hide behind with your hateful, stupid, dishonest, anti-Christian postings.

The STAR and WOSO will be around long after you are taken to a hospice for the insane. You sound loco...

We should all ignore you and your hateful, stupid postings against Puerto Ricans.

Long live the wonderful Puerto Ricans and may God continue to bless the beautiful Enchanted Island called Puerto Rico!!!!!!

Wow! How weird.
Here I was just going to tell everyone how my very deep-in-the-mountains country half of the family (the other half are city people) ALL understand and even speak English and want to always please and assist the mainland tourists, businessmen, etc.
But what do I know, I guess the perception from some people's p.o.v. is different. Please don't be so ignorant.
Get informed people, I never heard of an anti-English or anti-American sentiment in my country (again we are not talking government personnel here).

I don't know where you got the information but check your sources. The San Juan STAR is still coming out as today July 11, 2008 Today's front page is a story about the U.S. credit rating agencies saying they do not support the proposed sale of the lottery system. Also, WOSO radio is not planning to leave the island.
All of the newspapers in Puerto Rico are having economic problems. El Nuevo Dia has laid off over 200 people already. El Vocero recently laid off some of its photographers and reporters.

I receive the home delivery of The San Juan Star by 6 a.m. I got today's issue and it was thicker than recent editions. I want this newspaper to survive. It is an important insitution for information here in Puerto Rico. All over the states, newspapers are having rough economic times as many other kinds of customer service businesses.

The English-language radio station WOSO in the San Juan metro area and eastern part of Puerto Rico is loaded with advertisers. Its weekday noon show "Speak Out" is an outstanding public service. I would say it is doing great in these rough economic times. Its president Sherman Wildman seems to know the radio business and is successful with his station.

Often listeners in the Virgin Islands can receive WOSO and call in to "Speak Out."

Both the STAR and WOSO are of great value to Puerto Rico. I hope they will be able to ride out these rough economic times.

One troll is always quitting. He cannot quit anymore. He quit enjoying a loving, caring life many years ago. Everytime he posts his uninformed, hateful, insane messages, he demonstrates that he is an hopeless souther belle out of a Tennessee William's play.

He is more like Ma Kettle than a Southern Belle...
