I came across this site yesterday. It looks like baseball player Sammy Sosa has been bleaching his skin. And he has color contacts in his eyes. I don't understand why so many latinos of African descent try to distance themselves from who they are. I'm sure many Dominicans are not upset to see this sad display of self hatred. Afro Latinos should love their complexion, features and hair texture. They need to stop trying to embrace the white standard of beauty. I know this can be difficult when you are spoon fed one image of beauty on a daily basis. But this type of behavior is really sad. But then again,I shouldn't be surprised. I remember a few years ago Sammy said in an interview that his skin was so "dark" because of his native American heritage.lol I feel sorry for this guy--he really needs to love himself.
Here's the site:

In the Dominican Republic many Blacks are in denial of their African heritage. I once saw a documentary about Dominicans who were clearly Negro who denied their identity and taught their children that they were not Black. They hated Haitians because they were "Black" and inferior.

You should see his house in Anacaona's Ave. in Santo Domingo, next to a number of embassies, and across Anacaona Pk. in the west end of the Malecón.

Breathtaking!

Why? The steroid case?

Maybe he has a skin condition.

No, his attempt to change his race. He must be suffering from MJS.

So he claimed. Others including his own sister said he bleached his skin. I believe the latter. Generally, people with vitiligo don't lose all of their coloring completely. There are areas on their body, albeit patches, that remain the original skin color. MJ was completely white and I mean milky white. There are medications now that can stop melanin production in your body and create white skin. It is not reversible.

He bleached it in order not to have "patches". And which sister are you referring to? LaToya? She's nuts.

If he only realized how horrible he looks. I tell you I hate when people who are dark skin try to lighten there skin color to appear white. The same goes for white people who stay laying in Sun tan beds to appear dark they look just as crazy. Be comfortable in your own skin. I'm a light skin Puerto Rican not looking to look Black or White or any color but what God gave me.

As long as skin is the issue and not the human being....

As I always say, it is easier to deal with "skin" than with a human being as a whole.

I agree with you. A person should learn to love who they are. I'm very comfortable in my own skin. And I'm not looking to be anyone else. But I think self-hatred is a mental disorder. This might apply to Sammy.

Sammy was questioned about his lighter skin. I came across his response on a Yahoo news quip:

"Sosa says a cosmetic cream he uses to soften his skin is the reason for his lighter skin tone. Sosa says he has been using the cream for a long time, and combined with bright TV lights, it made his face look whiter than it really is."

I do not believe a word of it.

When I was in eleventh and twelveth grade of H.S.(early 70's), the Aramis line of men's cosmetics came up with a tanning, face foundation (without the need for damaging sunlight).

My H.S. was air conditioned.

From the middle 70's to the 80's, men's eye make up became a fashion statement (especially to go to clubs).

Men have been waxing our mustaches and beards. We have been coloring our hair; changing hairstyles and jewelry.

Skin is the body's largest muscle. Forever, it has being used for as a canvas for tatoos.

Good for Sammy! It is your skin and your money, man. Go for it, until you get tired of it.

You are right in that he can do as he pleases, however, he will lose the respect of just about everyone. There are drugs available that halt the production of melanin in the body. The process is irreversible. I would wager that this is what he is taking.

If the man wants to be lighter, let him be lighter! LOL

¡Que jodienda! LOL

He'll have my respect, as the King used to have. He is his own man!

lol I see your point. But come on Jorge. Don't you think it's a little bit weird? Why would a rational and sane man do this? Maybe he has that disease Michael Jackson claimed he had. I think it's called vitiligo. I don't know how much truth there is to that. You're right,Sammy can do whatever he wants to his face. But I think self hatred is a mental disorder. I guess Sammy believes that being lighter is better or superior. He wouldn't be the first person to think this way, would he?*rolls eyes*

Daily Horoscope for December 19

Gemini

Maybe it's pre-Christmas tension but people can turn nasty in the blink of an eye today. This is especially likely if they've got a lot on their plate or they think they're very important, and you may have to treat them with kid gloves if you want to avoid getting sucked into a bad-tempered war of words. Some gentle humor may help to rescue the situation before it descends into acrimony.
