On some level, this is absurd. On another level, this is really very amusing. And on another, I think that the EU granting exclusive rights to either one of the countries would be absolutely wrong. Both have a tradition. Both have the right to use the name. Let the buyer decide where he wants his cheese from. Look at the label and ask yourself, "Do I want Slovak cheese or Polish cheese?"

Let the buyer decide where he wants his cheese from. Look at the label and ask yourself, "Do I want Slovak cheese or Polish cheese?" The problem is, something the press does not inform about, that both the Poles and Slovaks had a tacit deal about oscypek. Slovaks produce a variation of oscypek cheese under slightly different name and the way they do it is not exactly the same as the Poles do. It would seem that both cheeses could be registred in the EU a sseparate products. The deal was that the Slovaks were to register theirs and the Poles theirs. This Slovak move means braking this agreement. I am not very much excited by this cheese competition. What amuses me more is this journalistic manner to make a "war' out of nothing. Today when you look at newspaper headlines you see only phrased like "row", "angered" etc. This so out of the planet and out of proportion to reality. Maybe we need another cod war in Europe.

It will be very interesting to follow the EU investigation and see the outcome.
The Scots have battled for years to have the exclusivity of the word Whisky, which is used by several countries, same for the French with the name Cognac (which is actually a town in France), now used by Russia, Moldavia, etc...
The names Brie and Camenbert for cheeses are exclusive to France (Camenbert is a town, Brie is a region) but used without shame by other countries too.
I have seen white sparkling wine labelled as Champagne coming from Australia, USA, Georgia and Russia. Champagne is a French region. The poaching of famous name is not new.

Hey Kraut,
You're right! You have to lick them yourself.
Germans don't steal? Germany was an army in search of a country.
If you're so smart, how come you lost 2 world wars?
Throughout your history you did nothing but bring misery to the world. That's what you're famous for. And anywhere you go in the world, that's what you're known for.
