Clergy in the Philippines divided over Arroyo's rule

As President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo found herself engulfed in a kickback scandal in February, she received a delegation of 40 priests at the Presidential Palace.

On the face of it, the sight was familiar: Corruption brought priests - including prominent opposition leader Cardinal Jaime Sin - to the palace doors in 1986, where they led thousands of citizens in toppling Ferdinand Marcos, one of Asia's longest-ruling strongmen. Their People Power Revolution inspired democratic outbursts around the world. Filipinos did it again in 2001, with Cardinal Sin again leading thousands to force out President Joseph Estrada - and put Ms. Arroyo in.

But the priests who turned up at Arroyo's door in February came not to protest, but to offer a prayer in support.

The move shocked many in the Philippines, and critics say it underlined a dramatic change: Arroyo has divided the Catholic church here more than at any other time in its history, blunting its moral authority as a force of opposition to government corruption. That is a central reason why, despite repeated outcries for the president's resignation, a "people power" revolution has not materialized again.

Yet the Arroyo administration has become synonymous with corruption. In 2007, Transparency International ranked it 131st out of 160 on its corruption perceptions index.

Not that all bishops support the president. "Some of us are rabidly supportive of the government. Some of us are angrily against the government," says Archbishop Oscar Cruz, a prominent critic of the administration.

As a result, the clergy in the Philippines find themselves deeply divided over Arroyo's rule. And that makes it impossible to lead. "We don't speak as one voice," the archbishop continues.

Dear Jane Abao,

You are a dyed-in-the-wood member on the Iglesia ni Cristo; in fact you consider yourself as an editor/contributor of their publications, namely, Believer Magazine and WOW Magazine. So far, you have been mentioning only the stand, if there's any, of the Catholic clergy but never in your postings have you made mention of YOUR religion's opinion on this political issue.

As a journalist, can you refer us to some of the articles or editorials that you may have written so more or less we can have a glimpse of what your political leanings are? So far the only one I saw- not read- was something related to INC and I was not quite particularly interested about it.

I hope you can accede to my request.

I don't think she is an INC member. Look at her postings in other threads related to INC, especially the killing of an ex-INC member.

I think I'm showing my ignorance here.
What is the relationship of ADD to INC? Aren't they related? Jane belongs to the former.

I think Jane is a member of ADD, which stands for Ang Dating Daan. There is a bitter competition between these two religious groups, and the rivalry has turned to perceived persecutions and accusations of executions. I'm not a member of any of the two, lol!

Hey, you!
Before you challenge me, give us a name first.

What right do you have for claiming what you imagine to be your right here? You don't even have a name.

This portion is for comments only to the above news on clergy. Can't you understand that?

You took the early bird mode to distract attention from this issue. Go away with your evil, scheming fool! I imagine you don't have any job but sow intrigues here and there.

How much are you paid by Gloria?

Hey relax.... I've been reading her comment above over and over to see what made you react like that, but i cannot see anything offensive in any way. Everybody has his own religious leanings, that's human, and normally, a person doesn't hide his religious affiliation. So what's the big deal being asked what is yours?

I'm sorry, i don't get it.

Have you read her posts in different threads? This is not the only time she challenged me. She dies many times a day when her Gloria is being attacked.

I'm talking particularly about her post on this thread, not the previous ones. Read it carefully again, and if you find it in anyway offensive then stand by your reply. But if you think you may have probably misunderstood her, then you know what to do. It's your call, i'm just pointing out an observation.

I am not an editor of just one thread. I am editor of the Philippines News Page. I do not think in fragmented terms, nor do I treat the attitude of people here per thread. If you behave the same in more than one thread, you get that much measure.

The topic here is the Clergy.

And these portions here below are meant for comments for this topic. That's clear enough.

And I will continue to challenge you.

And as I've said before, you are a very depressed person, with a very pessimistic outlook in life, with the compulsive inclination of posting negative information and taking joy when you elicit a corresponding negative response, as well.
An observant reader here can easily predict what's Jane Abao's next posting is going to be like. On the day it sounded more positive, she probably took her Prozac. And your knee-jerk reaction? "Oh, she's being paid by Gloria".
IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WHEN I POINTED OUT THAT YOUR RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION MAY NOT ALLOW YOU TO HAVE A FAIR APPRECIATION OF EVENTS?

Do not threaten me again of expulsion because I was critical of you. And as a Topix editor as you grandiosely claim you are (as if it's big deal), you should be the first one to know that you can be exposed to criticism. And you should be ready to respond logically and intelligently. You don't have the power to expel me. That's in the Topix guideline. Only the Topix board based in Palo Alto, CA can.

In your report card, the best comment I can give of you is that you're not in a good mental state so please don't mislead us with your postings that were premised on depressive thinking.

You missed the opportunity, sweetheart. I was very sincere to send you a Bizu cake via myAyala.com and you could have known my address, phone #, and email address. Maybe next time.

I know sweetie, but it would have been a two-way disclosure. Not that I want to keep myself secret to you, but in my world, people are shaped and configured to be security conscious paranoid animals, lol!

Can't you just give me what I want?
